Someday, when quantum computing becomes an everyday thing, those BTC will be re-discovered.  Of course, they will also likely be worthless.  And neutron-annihilation type weapons that make nukes look like pea-shooters will also ... blah blah blah, far future blah

I just happened to remember about this so-called "neutron annihilation" power, that's supposedly on par with or surpass anti-matter -- matter annihilation as far as power output.  I was introduced to the concept by a book I read about a year ago:  "The Physics of Christianity" by Frank Tipler.  It's a sequel to his (much better, IMO) masterpiece "The Physics of Immortality".  The second one reads like crazier than any science fiction I've ever read / seen / heard...  Like Da Vinci Code + Star Wars + Star Trek TNG on crack+meth+steroids+LSD+DMT.

Same for me, I've got multiple backups even for my mobile wallets which don't have a lot of BTC in them. The poll sucks because not losing coins to the black hole has nothing to do with being lucky, it's a question of making stupid decisions and not making stupid decisions.

I am curious as to how many bitcoins are lost in a given year.

Introducing constraints to the economy only serves to limit what can be economical.

Back when I was mining for a bit, the pool apparently let itself get SQL injected. WTF, SQL injection in 2011, seriously? I don't remember them admitting or denying it, but the passwords or their hashes were leaked in one way or another, which is a massive blunder either way. Then again, Gox also let that happen, so I guess Bitcoiners just didn't care about security then. That, or the pool just took the BTC themselves, I can never tell the difference.

www.bitcoinpool.com <-- debtor of ~2.8 BTC who never intends to pay. It didn't take long until I noticed, so the losses are on a level I can live with. Tongue

Destroyed BTC... I think someone locked 0.1 BTC into one of those crazily unstable Schildbach Wallets on one of these vendor-controlled phones without backup capability. I've been able to restore them when I made the same mistake with around 100 BTC. I had properly made a backup after generating the private key for Bitcoin. Yay for discipline, and yay for Nexus One vs the TPM-legacy crapware that are >90% of mobile phones. Cool

Bottom line: Stolen < 3 BTC, endangered but recovered ~= 100 BTC, destroyed by people I know = 0.1 BTC. I think that's an acceptable record so far.
