This is a real opportunity for the community to do some outreach. I will be sending small amounts to friends as soon as this is launched.

Everyone I know has heard of bitcoin (and not because of me) - the time is ripe to go mainstream

Not sure this is a fantastic idea.  Might be okay if they're careful about security, but facebook isn't without issues of its own.  I often see people get "click-jacked" on facebook, where they click on something and it automatically creates a post on their wall liking/sharing it without them noticing.  Next it'll be "bit-jacked" where they click on something and it deducts a few bits from their wallet.  So combined with the usual post about third party services controlling the private keys, this also adds a nice public arena for everyone to watch while people's wallets get hacked and then it spreads around social media like wildfire with the notion that Bitcoin isn't safe to use because some third party provider did a bad job with security.

Might be an opportunity, but it's fraught with potential pitfalls.

this sounds like a cool way to get people integrated with bitcoin, but it doesn't seem to be a real gamechanger or anything.. i'd consider wallstreet jumping in or a big corporation adopting btc a big deal.

Oh nice! Will definitely take a look. Giving people something of value is more powerful than just talking at them about it.

I think this is pretty nice from Facebook.
They will make bitcoin more mainstream by doing this.
Think of all that facebook people who maybe never heard of bitcoin or are gonna try it now because of Facebook.
Remember they have so much users, really good news I would say.

of course CoinDesk doesn't bother to mention the privacy concerns here.  Building a database of BTC address -> Facebook address.
