It is possible to mine any coin with any hardware that can solve the according algorithms. The question you should ask is: Is it profitable to mine with a CPU?

The answer to that is NO.

CPU, GPU even ASIC none of them is better at making money with Bitcoin than taking the needed investment directly to buying Bitcoin (or an Altcoin) and selling it with a profit when the value has increased.

To make it clear: Valid reasons to mine is supporting the network of the coin and to learn about the process as a hobby from a technical point of view. Trying to use mining to gain from it is at least a waste of time and for most people probably a huge waste of money.

My suggestion to you: Just learn about how to setup mining and try it as it is a nice start. Then do the maths yourself and calculate how much coins your hardware can mine and what the electricity it consumes doing it costs. You will find the mining isactually costing you money instead of making you money. Instead of mining just save up the cost of electricity you would expend on mining and periodically use that saved money to buy bitcoin directly, put them aside, forget about them and be happy about the increased value of your coins a few years later.

If you want to get Bitcoin faster than that, work for them. Plenty of opportunity around.

You can try mining asome alt-coins. Look up at  www.coinwarz.com/cryptocurrency and try to find some. Don't even think about mining btc, it's not worth it anymore.

You can mine CPU only coin as it is the most profitable for CPU mining currently. But please let us know your CPU spec so we can let you know if its worth destroying your laptop..

You can find a list of cpu coins on http://cpucoinlist.com/.
The site is created by btc-mike, and the the thread for the site is here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=379601.0.

Just a friendly reminder, monitor the temperature to avoid overheating. Smiley

The amount of RAM you have in your laptop isn't really important, what you should have is a powerful cpu to mine some cpu-only altcoins.

you can CPU mine altcoins that have low difficulty, but you may end up frying your laptop. with higher difficulty rate and/or networks with botnets, you're going to see a low return, unless you manage to speculate really well and choose the right coins at the right times.

well, just to reiterate LOL -- if this is just for fun, you may consider that you may not want to fry a laptop for a little bit a fun. but to each his own! Tongue

I dont see any fun on burning down  your laptop triying to mine 0.0001 litecoin per hour..
I would say for "educative" purposes it may be correct.. try to learn how to mine alt-coins and when you see a new topic in the alt section regarding a new coin, mine it before others.  Cheesy

It is hard to say.
Some people enjoy being beaten, some enjoy being shocked, some may enjoy seeing his laptop in flames lol. JK Grin
