So here is a little background check for all Cryptonote based coins. Hope you find this helpful
The protocol has been in development since 2012
The first CN coin was Bytecoin [BCN]. It was discovered when most of the currency was already mined which lead to possibility of centralization. This was a point of failure for the currency but also for the CN tech.
To make this Brilliant Anonymous technology get adopted widely, Bitmonero was launched by TFT (thankful for today) as a fair visible pre-announced launch. TFT wanted merge mining for Bitmonero but the community clearly was against it. The name was also average. Before launch TFT was requested to change his stand about mm and the name. He agreed to change the name but was against dropping the mm idea.
He went ahead and launched Bitmonero. His behavior sometimes felt anti community and ill do what i want type. The name was awful, some early adopters who had most of the Bitmonero hashrate went ahead and voted on a new name. The new name was Monero. Remember, TFT agreed to change the name.
TFT still wanted merge mining with Bytecoin even when Monero hashrate had far surpassed Bytecoin's.
TFT's friend amphibian launched Fantom Coin to satisfy their MM urges.
By now, Monero code was being maintained by those early adopters
Monero hashrate was touching the skies when Bytecoin followers started FUD'ing the Monero thread heavily. There was almost a little war going on the subject of a hidden improved miner.
Meanwhile between this war, a troll named Oracion Seis posted a thread declaring he is relaunching Monero.
Yes, relauching Monero when people were getting confused of all the Bitmonero, Monero, Bytecoin and FantomCoin drama.
As expected, people strongly rejected a Monero relaunch by someone who gave a shameless reason that Monero was not fair enough. (More like he couldnt mine enough).
The troll decided he will change the name to Quazar Coin which is the present day coin people are buying thinking its more rare and better than Monero
The relaunch thread was shortly deleted by him
Hope this clears the confusion anyone has regarding CryptoNote
