Why don't you pay them in BTC, promote it a little and try to teach them something about bitcoins.

That's what I'm trying to do. I'm not charging any money to enter the competition.. and it's a small project.

I thought given that it's free there's be tons of people who'd be interested, but it's actually quite a bit of work getting the word out.

I'd love it if you told some friends (especially if they have kids / are kids)
