That is a very good point. Does anybody have an idea of how much more power that extra GB consumes?

Was debating on this - but the price and the reject rate (1/6 dead) I hit on the last 5870 deal has me doubting...

AMD also will not warranty these cards, despite what is said on the page about a 90 day warranty. That was my experience when I called them, at least.

It's a shame, I bought 8 of the 1gb and they have been rock solid for me mining at 950 on air with memclock 160.
One has a fan issue that won't allow me to manually control the fan but i fixed that with some creative extra fan positioning.
Anyway, must have gotten lucky, but 2gb will suck with extra power consumption.

I bought two and they were ok. Both had bent brackets. Of all of the cards I have purchased, these were the only ones that were substandard. With the higher price and higher power usage due to the ram, it is really not worth it.

If that's accurate, then wow. 228W is encroaching on 5970 territory, but at half the MH/s.

If you put in 97 right now, nothing will show up in your cart. But if you input 96, it will. Thus they have 96 cards as of this post... at least I'm guessing that's how it works.

You cant deduct power consumption from the PCie connector. 40W TDP extra at full speed and full bandwith already seems highly doubtful to me for 1GB extra (more likely, those cards are clocked higher?), but even if that is the case, lowering the memory clock to 200 Mhz will cut that powerconsumption difference by >5x and since mining uses very little memory bandwidth the actual power consumption difference is likely even far less. IOW, you are probably looking at just a few watts.

I think you are right if we are talking about max TDP, but certainly not while mining. I have some 2GB Eyefinity 5870s and they certainly don't use another 40 watts per card. In fact, I would wager that it is a wash since the cards actually run cooler at a given fan speed and will therefore have a little less leakage (or you wouldn't have to run the fan as fast which can save power also). They have a full height vent on the back because of the missing DVI ports. That being said, I wish they weren't charging so much for the cards. People buying them for 210 on eBay is changing where Bens decides to price the cards. ...and *that* being said, I still bought a few. Looks like they can only be ordered 3 at a time for some dumb reason.

I might get one of these if I can't find anyone willing to sell one in my marketplace thread. Wonder what the failure rate is like with these vs the 1gb ones they had a month ago.

if we don't buy them, i am sure the price will just drop. $210 is not that great of a deal, plus this thing have NO warranty (don't get fooled by the site). AMD OEM is NO warranty if not purchased from a OEM. I am sure bensoutlet is NOT a PC OEM.

Based on their decreasing stock, someone is buying them at that price, regardless if that price is too high. As long as someone's buying I doubt they're going to cut the price.

I had so many of these cards with lower voltage BIOSes that I started blindly flashing every one of them that I set up. I bought 44 of these and ended up with 3 bad ones. I either got lucky or you were very unlucky... or your cards need a BIOS flash.

Sveetsnelda,
1 card, when inserted, won't allow the PC to boot. Not sure what to do there...
1 card will boot in Windows but won't work at all in linux. It mines OK in Windows but the video output is garbled at boot time. Not wanting to keep it as my miners are linux only...
Might bios flash help the 2nd of the 2 cards?

This card ... $210 for 440MH/s = $2.1MH/$
A 7970 ... $550 for 675MH/s = $1.2MH/$
Now on a MH/J perspective the 7970 wins for sure. Factoring in salvage value the 7970 probably does well too.

Alternatively: 5870 - $160/440MH/s = $.363 per 1MH/s 5870 - $210/440MH/s = $.477 per 1MH/s 7970 - $550/675MH/s = $.814 per 1MH/s The 7970 costs $.337 more per mega hash upfront compared to the $210 5870. The 7970 salvage value may have to compete with the FPGA's.
