Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

This is a cool promotion, however very costly for Coinbase if they are the one's funding it.  Would love to see this expanded to other countries by others.

Maybe this is finally something the bitcoin foundation can look at.  They are in need of something useful to do.

Peace.

So far, it has cost the Coinbase more than $200,000. Not a big amount for them, as their market cap is expected to be over $100 million. Also, it is very heartening to note that the largest number of users have come from some of the best Universities, such as the University of Michigan, University of California, and the University of Illinois.  Grin
