After half an hour, my wallet has zero connections to the network. The debug file has lines and lines of 'trying connection' / 'connection timeout'. Of course I have a working Internet connection.

That dump is because of vericoin being added to mintpal . People are selling off all other coins to get on the vericoin boat. Smarter people are looking it as SUMMER SALE on bittrex and slowly scooping up the cheap coins.
