Quote from: theymos
If you have any ideas for new features or changes that are reasonably high-priority and realistic, discuss them in this section.
I think a user-tagging system where mentioning @user in a post would send a notification to @user that he was tagged in a post would be a good thing to implement.

This can then also be used by a tipping bot such as ChangeTip on Reddit/Twitter, thereby allowing users to receive tips for helpful posts.

This was mentioned in an earlier thread;

I'm a member of a few other forums, and having notifications at the top of the screen with who quoted you, and the topic, with a direct URL to both (the user profile, and the topic), makes it so much nicer. I can normally just center click all of the notifications to get them all up in tabs, and read the post, and decide rather or not to respond.

I like the sound of this. What type of forums have this already?

Instead of quoting people directly how about an option to just click something on or near their username so it auto types for example @hilariousandco. This would be good for times when you don't want or need to quote the whole post and it'd make things easier on mobiles.

Would it also be possible to get a notification anytime someone mentions your username in a thread you haven't posted in?

I like the @username feature, it's something that many people have become well-acquainted with over the past few years. Should it be effective in quotes of quotes where the @username is mentioned? I guess that could be useful still. Once again it could lead to abuse from people constantly notifying you, but I think that this is unlikely to happen for general forum users, maybe more so for staff.

I'm not so sure on the general mentioning of usernames though, think that is over the top. Also what if your username is something that  people mention but aren't necessary referring to you like 'shitcoin' you would be getting a lot of false positive notifications. Of course people with usernames like 'and'  or 'the' etc could be filtered in a stop list, but generally I think that it is a bad idea.

I support this option, as long as it isn't abused (have an option to toggle rather notified of @username or not).

Yep, as the user above quoted me I'd obviously like this feature. An option to block notifications from certain users would be helpful as well if they start to abuse the feature.

Allowing usernames with spaces and other fancy characters presents a challenge to this. I guess that freedom would have to be somewhat chopped if this is to be implemented. Or do something weird like @"fancy username here" (thus only disallowing quotes and nothing else).

On other forum systems, you can do [member=insertusername], and it'd like to that user's profile, maybe have @[member=insertusername] instead of just @insertusername.

This way, the system knows that anything within the brackets of member= is the actual username (spaces included) ?

I think a solution to this would be what I mentioned previously in another thread: a @ button or something under the users profile name or something which can be clicked and it'll autofill their name for you (and notify the user) once posted.

And worked with javascript disabled Smiley.

What if the user's post is on page 1 and my reply is on page x in a different tab, I can't click on the user's button and have it auto-filled. I just want to reference him by typing @user, @"user" or @[user], not click a button.

Then just go to page one and click it, or just quote the message instead. Tagging people with @ is meant to be a quick response and to cut clutter by quoting unnecessarily, but if it's on the first page it's probably a good idea to quote. Also, maybe both tagging features could be implemented. Clicking a button would save people having to type out usernames all the time unless there's some sort of autofil which I doubt there will be.

The easiest way is to just use the @username way of doing things, IMHO.
It gives a simple key for the JS to watch and bring up a dialog that allows you to choose the user you wish to tag. Rather than keying on every single keystroke and trying to match that against a username like how facebook does. As for a BBCode option, this may fall into the backlog because it's more error prone with misspellings while the dialog, the user can simply just click on the user they mean to tag and inject the right username (spaces and all).

Also disabling notifications for username tagging should be simple enough.

I like it, similar to when you do /u/Username on Reddit. It is good, but make sure it does not (or at least a toggle) notify the user if they are quoted and it it had an @mension in it.

Example:
User 1 @mensions a user.
User 2 quotes user 1's message
User @mension gets notified for the original post, and the quote
