I recommend funneling your Bitcoin transactions through Tor.
Just use blockchain.info or another online wallet while using the Tor browser bundle or otherwise.
However, do not attempt to purchase Bitcoins on an exchange under Tor unless you plan to use a lesser-known VPN in addition to it. They'll just shut you down before you can withdraw due to anti-money laundering laws and such.
You can simply funnel your Bitcoins through The Silk Road after you purchase, which will break any ties to your purchasing location. Your coins will be mixed on a sub-cent scale with hundreds (maybe thousands) of other Bitcoins and made highly trace-resistant.
There are other launderers but use your own discretion when trying them.

The Communists say, equal labour entitles man to equal enjoyment. No, equal labour does not entitle you to it, but equal enjoyment alone entitles you to equal enjoyment. Enjoy, then you are entitled to enjoyment. But, if you have laboured and let the enjoyment be taken from you, then – ‘it serves you right.’ If you take the enjoyment, it is your right.

Yes, the port is correct. You want to make sure Tor is fully launched before launching Bitcoin otherwise you may inadvertently reveal your IP.

That's a good idea of using 'The Silk Road' as well to hide your transaction. I've set the Bitcoin client up to use Tor and am getting the following error message - Feb 12 22:03:21.141 [Warning] Your application (using socks4 to port 8333) is giving Tor only an IP address. Applications that do DNS resolves themselves may leak information. Consider using Socks4A (e.g. via privoxy or socat) instead. For more information, please see https://wiki.torproject.org/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#SOCKSAndDNS.
