Hello. I live in Los Angeles, and was wondering if anyone local could meetup to exchange cash for bitcoin.  How does all of this work?  Totally new to this but need bitcoins.  Thanks!

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

have you tried mtgox.com ?

don't let me make you question your assumptions

There's a ton of good online market places you can exchange for USD.

https://btc-e.com/ works well too if you have other things like NMC and LTC.

Your quickest options are to:

1.) Deposit cash at a bank:

2.) Make a trade with someone on the #bitcoin-otc marketplace where you pay with Moneypak
 - http://www.bitcoin-otc.com

If you are ever wishing to sell bitcoins in person, there is: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/sys/2807480111.html

Other options:

Putting money on BTC-E is not a good idea as they have just been hacked.

SealsWithClubs poker room has  over 400 players online. Buy in from .01 to 60btc.      BTCSportsMatch lets you bet sports with vig free lines!  Best kept secret in bitcoin....          LocalBitcoins.com is very user-friendly now for bank transfers.  You don't have to live close to trade when in the same currency area.
Electrum client is awesome. Try it. And please stop sending bitcoins to sites run by security newbies, or don't complain when you lose everything.

I kinda like your idea of exchanging for cash in person, it's like the difference between ebay and craigslist.  Of course, today ebay has buyer protection, but when they didn't, it made me anxious and was a total pain when someone was not entirely moral.
