This mural in the Main Reading Room of the Jefferson Building at the Library of Congress places Islam in a position that
indicates the inclusiveness with which America faced Islam more than a century ago.

Not sure if it has a name.  Edit: Human Understanding  ref: http://www.loc.gov/loc/walls/jeff1.html  section "The Paintings in the Dome"

Both of you are correct. I just used random.org to select a winner.

I got this as the answer Blashfield collar painting and mural of Human Understanding http://www.flickr.com/photos/photophiend/3523986453/in/photostream/

I forgot to add a rule like "no links, closest correct answer wins"

There will be another Quick Quiz soon , keep your eyes open Smiley

I still don't get it.  You asked for the name and location.  I provided both.  Patrick did not provide the title.  That is all.

Patrick did provide the title, the title is "Human Understanding", the title you gave is "Progress of Civilization". The answer I was looking for was "Blashfield collar painting and mural of Human Understanding" , I still accepted you answer as both of you provided links and the title of the mural can be given in several ways.

Actually I did get a title and gave the reference (it took me a couple of more minutes after my original post).  I was interested you obtained a different title and am curious where it came from as your link does not appear to mention it.

I only knew about this quiz because it was pointed out to me a few hours ago and did a simple look up of "dome mural islam mages" the last I assumed was a contraction of middle ages which apparently was correct.  The #1 google image had a pic that matched.

(while typing I see Sen has responded - I'm not fussed - happy for Littleshop to take the prize)

I am not going to continue anymore and accept your decision as to the winner but....

The title of the mural is not "human understanding" and it IS "Progress of civilization" .

I was interested so did some more hunting.  The painting appears to be "Evolution of Civilization", "Progress of Civilization" and a couple of other titles.

I did also find  "Progress of Civilization" but that was a sculpture.  http://www.aoc.gov/cc/art/pediments/prog_sen.cfm

(Again, posts while I am typing - see above link)

hmm yes, Progress of Civilization is the sculpture.

"The sculptural pediment over the Senate entrance on the U.S. Capitol's east front is called Progress of Civilization."

anyway, I already knew there were several different answers that can be given, so it seems you got the title wrong and patrick got it right.

But I still accepted you entry due to the link you provided. I just accepted whatever was in the link as correct answer.

the website you gave http://www.parisdeuxieme.com/2010/01/library-of-congress-main-reading-room.html has this :-

"The round mural set inside the lantern of the dome depicts Human Understanding, looking upward beyond the finite intellectual achievements represented by the twelve figures in the collar of the dome."

so if the rules included no links, then still patrick would have had the correct answer (for the name of the mural) Smiley

that's the end of Islamic Quiz - 2 , until next time  Wink
