Bitcoin is about innovation, the ability of a free market to produce solutions to needs/requirements - as it becomes necessary, it becomes a profitable opportunity - blockchain related tech is going to be another area of growth/development in the medium term...

There's no need to buy Terabytes of hard disks when the blockchain will reach that size, just install an alternative client like Multibit / Electrum / Armory!

if we reach visa's number of transactions per day (currently around 200k)
and each bitcoin transaction is about half a kilobyte
the storage growth rate per day would be 100 megabytes per day

Seems to be some misunderestimating in the last two posts. Armory is dependent upon bitcoind. Ergo, Armory installs are nodes.

Anyone with a campaign ad in their signature -- for an organization with which they are not otherwise affiliated -- is automatically deducted credibility points.

Visa's transaction total is way, way higher than 200,000 per day.  Probably closer to 200,000,000 transactions per day.

Quote from Armory developer:

(2) Please dear god do not connect Armory to an untrusted node!.  You will die a fiery death.  Armory does absolutely no blockchain validation: it is designed to use that connection as its secure gateway.

I keep the full node on mine
18 GB yah it's starting to get big but I still like the full node as long as I don't need to redownload it
Difference between downloaded and waiting on the internet to update it.

Well as long as someone in this thread isn't using a 20GB Solid State Drive from a few years ago there is not really a concern of maxing out space
Otherwise I would start considering moving it somewhere else lol.

Is there ANY downside to just using mulibit?  It seems like a no brainer to avoid downloading the blockchain

Yes. There is a distinct downside to using multibit. You don't have a copy of the blockchain, and must therefore trust in the honesty and competency of others.

That and also the huge list of ever increasing altcoins, all these coins require a user to download it's wallet first before start using them and if u plan to mine them or even buy them for hodling you need more disk space and also their own blockchain  size will increase as they themselves get old.

No, there is far far more bigdata is being generated everyday, and stored somewhere.
According to wikipedia:

"as of 2012, every day 2.5 exabytes (2.5×10^18) of data were created"

I think bitcoin will be nothing compared to this, even if it becomes the currency of the new Illuminati world order.
