Perhaps a good step for stores would be to pay all change (excluding bills) in Bitcoins.
This would be useful as the government tries to find cheaper metal for our devalued currency.
Just pay the cash then scan the customer QR code on a keychain.
This has been suggested before, but unfortunately the thread died I think. It's a really great idea in my opinion. Not only is it convenient, but it will expose a lot of people to Bitcoin, and give them some Bitcoins to play around with in the process. Once they find out by playing with them how easy and convenient they are to use for payments, people might start lining up at Mtgox to buy some more
The most difficult part would be convincing stores to actually start doing this. Does anyone have any good ideas how we could convince stores to implement this idea?

Yes! Ask.
(not trying to be funny)I see this as an excellent idea. It can easily be started by small libertarian-minded mom-and-pop shoppe owners, opposed to the 7-11's. I even envision a sign that reads, "We'll give your clad change in Bitcoin. Just ask."
