I'm trying to learn a multiple of languages at once, which probably isn't a good thing. However I'm doing duolingo, memrise and just trying to immerse myself in the language itself. Spanish speaking shows and what not (spanish is the language I've decided on at the moment, I took some in school but have forgotten just about everything) but I don't feel like I'm learning enough. They base a lot of it on repetition of words that you got wrong, this understand, but I want to progress faster and it isn't helping when out of the blue I'm getting a word they tried to teach me 3 or so pages ago.

So just out of curiosity how are you learning these languages? I spent a good 2 hours on spanish last night, and I am still getting sentences like me gustaria un poco de vino por favor (which i'm pretty sure is wrong) wrong still.

Does anyone have any language tips they can give?

What else could I say?

Its possible  to learn multiple languages at once, but if they are close linguistically it gets easy to mix them up.

Practice like its a second nature. Record several questions in a cassette, playback and answer the questions as phrases.
This forces you to answer quickly, and over time it will get more natural.

In addition, basic phrases really help. Try to learn the present form of these http://sipuebla.com/verbos/100verbs.htm like "I open", "I buy" etc

Thanks, that's something I know in school at least I had a lot of trouble with was past/present tenses and how to talk to someone formal informal, etc. That will most likely help out a lot, linguistically I read that if one language has roots in others it doesn't make it terribly hard to learn the others but maybe I read that wrong.

That's right. The more close a language is to a language you know, the easier it is to associate it with something you already know. This has something to do with brain connections;
For example, if you know Spanish it's easier to learn French than Russian.

In my opinion the best way is to learn the swear words of a given language and also maybe get a job where they only speak the language that your trying to learn and see if you swim or float.

I really enjoy learning and speaking languages, the practice is one important step, learn the vocabulary and start creating sentences in the language that you're learning. Also try listen and watch programs or music in your goal language and it will be really useful to learn about the vocabulary.

You will need to be a geek to do this sort of thing.

That's why I'm intensively going over the stuff at memrise and duolingo and making sure I remember things, I'm even marking down the things I"m forgetting to look up later. I'm still only at basic spanish vocab and I don't even have a general grasp at that. But eventually I'll probably get it, I don't know.

Any other tips tipsters?

I am just not 100% convinced that learning multiple languages at once is good thing for normal human with normal intelligence, memory and capabilities. You should maximize your efforts and focus on one language at time. And if you want to learn multiple languages start from the easiest one.

Yeah, I realized that after the last time I wanted to learn Spanish and another language at the same time. I've already had some school time in with Spanish/French and some stuff I'm relearning again and picking up quick but there's still some things I need work on. That's why I'm going over basic vocab first, just to kind of refresh myself. I'm not sure what language I want to "focus" on entirely though because I'm interested in so many.

Yeah I've been there and memrise, the problem is retaining the learned information and being able to hear it and answer to it. Like if I was to say me llamo skottiejay I know what that means, but I wouldn't know if someone was ASKING me what my name was, that's what the problem is the listening for the words and understand what they are saying, but maybe that just comes in time.

I used to learn german when I was in college.

It was like learning any other language, it did work, you just need to practice with native language speakers. that's it.

College = USA?

Wie lange hast du gebraucht bis du Deutsch flüssig sprechen konntest? Würde mich halt echt interessieren, weil die meisten sagen dass es für sie extrem schwer ist das zu lernen..

The "learn along the way approach?" Cheesy? Yeah that seems like a good method, I just want to know what I'm saying so I don't offend anyone really.

I am currently trying to perfect my English, the best and fastest method would be with a native speaker teacher, however I am making considerable progress with the duolingo android application

I am from India and I know in total five languages and they are:

  • English
  • Hindi
  • Urdu
  • Bengali
  • Telegu

I can read and write almost all of them and presently I am learning French. In my opinion your mother tongue or your native language is the base for you to learn all other languages as your mind tends to convert your mother language to another language. Hence, In my opinion you should know your native language thoroughly then only you can speak in other languages.

My primary language is Arabic but I have learned English because it is a universal language and we need it in any field and the best way to learn the language is to watch movies and videos in addition to learning the basic rules through institutes and schools and learning the language is a cumulative matter we must every day learn new vocabulary

I am currently learning Russian, and I started learning it by communicating with one of the people inside Russia, where it helped me a lot to learn the basics of the language, and today I complete my education through one of the disasters that are explained in private institutes, and my only advice for you to learn the language and master it well is to communicate with One of the people who speak the language you want to learn

Duolingo itself is quite enough for me. However, if I want to dive even a little into the world of native speakers, then I watch some videos on youtube in which this language is spoken.

I think thats a good advise. Trying to learn a new language is very difficult and doing so wit a naitive speaker is the best way. If you play any particular games I would recommend playing with players from the particular country you are trying to learn the language.

In the end it all depends of what you are trying to get better in - is it speak / understanding or even writing. For me to not forget a language completely I have used in a while I am trying to watch movies in French with subtitles. It forces me to read and listen to French. I also find listening to audio books when travelling a great tool to keep practicing my language skills. But then again, 1 on 1 sessions with the teacher would be the best, but are expensive.

Russian is one of the most difficult languages I have tried to learn.
Indeed, if you have other people to communicate with them in this language you are going to learn it fast.
It is like you have a tutor that is going to help you and correct you in any grammar error.

Born in PH so Filipino, raised in USA so English native, and lived in KR so I know some Korean.

I've had to "study" Korean and what worked best for me was the "Fluent Forever" method.

It's as neurology based method and it really works - google it.

Tips from me :

1.Watch movies which you like on a language you need. ! Do not watch movie on that language if you didn`t see it on your native language, it will be too hard to receive information. 3rd time or 4th will be good. just take your note and pencil and type words which you don`t know.

2.Look for some other ways to get some stress situations. Here you can look for a nice guidance how to get a useful stress for your mind - https://translatehub.org/how-to-become-a-literary-translator/ For example, you should take a payable task on that language, that will make your brain way versitale.

3.Study 10 minutes for 10 days, not 100 minutes for one day. In general, peoples memory is short so it is better to not overfeed it.

4.Practice verbally. You can find a work with this language, and it will be good if there will be phone calls etc.

I'm trying to learn some Nihonggo as I watch Japanese Anime especially One Piece. Believe me, it's working. It may not be that accurate as it is but a little by little as you watch the episodes, you've got to learn some basic words from it.

There's also this app that I've watched on a travel vlogger that he shared which is also helpful but I forgot its name.

I'm trying to learn some Nihonggo as I watch Japanese Anime especially One Piece. Believe me, it's working. It may not be that accurate as it is but a little by little as you watch the episodes, you've got to learn some basic words from it.

There's also this app that I've watched on a travel vlogger that he shared which is also helpful but I forgot its name.
can fell you mate because we anime lover needs to learn Japanese language if we wanted to connect in the movie more than when reading Sub Titles.

my advantage is i have a nephew who came from japan(actually half breed His father is japanese and mother is Filipino) so She is tutoring me since last week if i have a free time lol.

pakhitheboss, I think that it also depends on a language, that you've chosen to learn. When I've been get more advanced level of English few months ago, because of certain work requirements, I've started watching specific films and reading specific articles. Also I've started getting online courses with professionals tutors, who are the experts in English.
You can't learn any language just by watching movies, you need to get the basics to understand the spoken language because there will be lot of difference in the formal and the spoken languages on most of the time.

It's nice to have a relative that has been borned half-half in nationality.

They can easily be understood and they won't be tired to teach you as they're very understanding. About anime's, I'm only remembering the basic greetings, calls and very little words.

But at least, it has taught me while enjoying watching animes.

His suggestion is actually what everyone needs to do, it's the basic things. Of course you get to learn all of it for you to be able to speak in another language.

It's easier to go for vocals than written. Which language you're learning now?

Firstly, I think that just studying grammar will not help much. Because you don't learn that language by doing that. You just learn the structure etc. of that language. I think one of the most important things to do to improve yourself is watching series/movies without subtitles (you can watch them with subtitles at the first times of course). That will definitely help you become more fluent in that language and you will improve your vocabulary etc. too of course. The other very important thing is that speaking to a person in that language for sure. It will directly effect your fluency in that language.

I agree!!! I think the best way to learn another language is to learn the words and then try to put them into practice.
Trying to speak, that's the main thing in learning a new language

Apart from my local dialogue I speak other local dialogue but the better way to learn about other languages is to stay close to people who speak the language, maybe consider moving to location where the language is used frequently by so doing, learning the language will much easier.

Does anyone have any language tips they can give?

My best advise I can give you to learn a language is just to force yourself in situation where you need to speak it. What I did in the past when learning a language was to just travel to the country alone. When being in a foreign country and you don't have friends with you, you will automatically start communicating with locals in their language. I learned the most when travelling. It might not help you to learn how to write, but it makes a huge difference in understanding and speaking.

English is my second language and i have really good tip for you. Watch movies/TV series or even cartoons ONLY with audio and subs on Spanish. This is good training of the things you learn in Duolingo because you can hear and see how the words are written.

There are many ways to be able to learn a new language, the most important thing is that we have a strong intention first. Usually I look for
video tutorials that we can get on the YouTube platform, learn first vocabulary words that are used for everyday conversation. After we have
started to remember it, practice by speaking directly to people in the country we are learning the language for. Suppose we are studying Japanese,
we need to speak directly to Japanese people, so that we can master the language faster. Now there are many platforms that we can use to talk
to people in other countries.

I studied German at school, but my level was close to elementary when, 7 years after graduation, I needed German for my career. I decided to repeat what I taught at school, but then I found more effective and high-quality teaching materials on https://ru-geld.de/en/german/levels-and-tests.html#for-lern. I really liked the new online textbooks with clear explanations and examples, a lot of interesting tasks in German, which help not only to better memorize new words and grammar, but also to practice in German. But the most important thing for me is that I was able to access all of this for free. It seems to me that the secret to successfully learning a new language is a consistent and thoughtful learning plan and stimulating the student's cognitive interest.
was wondering why all of your post composed of pure links?

i find some of the accounts here in off topic same account like you,.

i am just curious on what is the deal why your account like others are posting pure links in all of their posts? is there any thing related ?

If you are still young, you can learn more languages. Although we cannot travel because of the epidemic, we can go out and play at will when everything improves. We can go wherever we want, and communication will not be hindered. .
If you want to learn a language, you can watch more movies and imitate them. I spend a little time every day learning other languages. Although dual subtitles were required at the beginning, they gradually accumulated. When you have accumulated that you already know what the meaning of a movie performance is, you don’t need to understand it through subtitles. You are one step closer to success.

Older people can also learn more languages. It is about how your will about that. If you really want to learn the other language, you will spend your time learning and practice and I will give a big portion in practising because, with practice, you will know what is wrong and what you need to learn more.
Watching more movies about that language can help you to understand and with practice, I am sure you will have the skills to speak that language. But you need to be patient because learning a new language will not easy as it says.

There is no age limit to be able to learn a new language, both young people and old people still have the opportunity to learn a new language.
Most importantly we must start with a strong intention, after that we must daily learn the language we want to master. Don't forget to take time
to practice it, can try to talk directly with people who come from the country that we want to learn the language. Suppose we want to learn Japanese,
we have to practice it by talking directly to Japanese people. That way we will be much more mastered the foreign language that we want to master,
especially now that there are many applications that make it easier for us to talk to people from all countries in the world.

There are language that I find difficult to learn no matter my effort...they just bore me.
But I have noticed that when I'm emotionally attached to a language, I easily learn their words. So, if you want to learn a language, you should probably find something you love about a tribe/society and learn the language of the society by learning that thing you love about them.

We are agreed with all you say because as long as we have a strong intention to know and learn that language, we will have an effort to search for how we can master that language. No matter if sometimes we feel it is difficult, we will not stop before we can master it. Actually, this era support and help us to learn a new language because we can use many media available on the internet such as Youtube, a free lesson on the website, or even joining in the conversation with other people. We can try to talk using video calls with that person to help us communicate to help us to master that language.

Apart from my local dialogue I speak other local dialogue but the better way to learn about other languages is to stay close to people who speak the language, maybe consider moving to location where the language is used frequently by so doing, learning the language will much easier.
There's no need to go from place to place mate just to learn other languages .

We have Full access in internet that Can give us what we need, There are voice apps in which you can download the Right pronunciation of each Language ,So you can practice on your own.

And also there are Online Teacher now, offering  Language courses over internet.

Sorry to ask but please have you tried in learning a new language through the voice apps ever before? If yes, how soft did you achieve that?

I think recitation is the best way to learn a foreign language. Of course, for me, I spend a lot of time on bitcointalk every day, which is also helpful for my English learning.

For me the best way to learn a new language is with Apps like duolingo. The have small sets of tasks you need to do every day, it includes, writing, listening and speaking. It only takes 10 minutes and you can repeat it as much as you want. Also if you forget your tasks you get reminders which is very helpful. You can use the App in the morning during breakfast, at night in bed or just when you are on the move. I improved a lot with it.

There are many people who want to learn a new language but cannot learn it at a certain time due to work or study. For them NHK world is a very effective method because you can learn the language at any time on our website you can find audio and text files of all the lessons on NHK World's easy new language learning website. If a lesson is difficult to understand you can listen to it as often as you like again there is no problem in skipping the part that you have learned.

In fact, continuous exposure to foreign language learning is the most effective method. I suggest you start with simple dialogues or movies that will fill your ears first.

I don't believe in Duolingo or Memrise. If you want to learn a language, the first thing you need is a teacher. Find someone who is a native speaker in your target language but wants to learn your language. Then teach each other. Seek out likeminded people. If you're learning Spanish, join Spanish learning forums and social media groups. Study together with other language learners. They'll keep you accountable and keep it fun.

If you're learning on your own, watch youtube videos with subtitles on in your target language. A big mistake people make is they watch youtube videos with English subtitles. The subtitles have to be in the target language. Then pause the video whenever you see a word you don't understand and run it through Google Translate. At first this will be incredibly laborious. As you get more proficient, you'll use Google Translate less and less. You can also slow the video down to 0.5% or 0.75% for better comprehension and then work your way up to normal speed.

My advice is to discard Duolingo, Memrise and all the other language learning apps. They are fun, but they are built for the purpose of making the developer money through addictiveness and user engagement. If the real goal is true fluency you've got to have conversations with native speakers. That's the real acid test of your proficiency.

Learning at least 1 word per day , from the meaning and how to use the word, in 1 year that would be 365 words or more?
then that might be enough to talk to someone with that language ,

I’m getting pretty far into French and lately I’ve just been listening to a lot of native material. For instance, Ted talks, or podcasts: Intermediate French Podcast, which is for learners. I watch some videos on the Easy French YouTube channel here and there. And I watch this show on Netflix called Dix PourCent. I put my weekly schedule in a productivity planner. I don't always follow it exactly the same way every week, but some things are constant (flashcards, lessons, pronunciation & listening practice).

When learning a new language I recommend full immersion.
It's best to speak the new language around native speakers and force yourself to communicate with them even if your vocabulary is limited.
I also think daily practice is absolutely essential. Duolingo or Babbel are great apps to practice on-the-go.

Finland is one good to learn. "Suomi", "Perisuomalainen" Food example, Kalakukko (Savo area), Finlandia Vodka, Fazerin sininen, Perunapiirakka, Poron käristys, Mämmi is (season food it looks like shit, but taste good), metsästäjän leike, wiener leike Smiley

If you have own Airplane, i recommend to visit Lappi, Kuusankoski, Lappeenranta, Oulu, Turku, Tampere (Kids like they have theme park there) Helsinki Vantaa (New Land and East New Land area = Uusimaa ja Itäinen Uusimaa) Oulu is one growing City. Northern Finland have "Saamelaiset" "Sami"

Helsinki you can see "Modern art" Kiasma. I live on main City area.

IMO the most effective way to learn languages is to a loooot of practice! But I know that it is not always possible. So you have to download a special app and do tasks every day! Every day, really! Also it is good to read different articles. It is okay if the theme of it is not familiar to you - you should teach your brain how to find a sense in different texts. So read about welding, chemistry, hunting, flowers... read about anything. Then write down the main sense of that article. Another tip is to find a singer/music band which uses the language that you want to learn. Try to translate their songs by yourself, get use to their singing. And the main tip is a regularity and motivation. You have to have several reasons of learning language to contunie doing it. And use forums to communicate - leave a suitable comms.

Maybe this tips would be useful for other readers, I'd be very happy then
