I am new to all this and I was wondering if bitcoin plus is good for someone with basic equipment and minimal time I can run it.

Is it effective and secure?

Unless you have a good graphics card your make more money CPU mining for Litecoin and if you have a good graphics card you can still mine for Bitcoin and Litecoin at the same time.
