It seems to me that in today's global consumer driven society, concepts like truth, justice and equality have been successfully suppressed by concepts such as trending, fashionable, new and improved. Have multi-national corporations truly diminished our capacity to think? Are people truly more concerned with the latest trends? Is this more predominant in America or does corporate consumer culture prevail in other countries as well?

Nicely pointed out I must say.. You are absolutely right... Today's society is actually driven by fashion, trend and other material things.. But then I don't think it is right to blame the multinational companies for this entirely.. It is the we people who have allowed them to do so.. If we wouldn't have accepted the latest trends promoted by them, they wouldn't have gone so far..

We used to be citizens, now we're all consumers.

The intensity of new trends is increasing every day and we are getting lost in it... Once we find ourselves completely sunken, then only we are going to realize what we have actually done.. And it is just not you or other people doing it....even I'm doing it..

I think it was a concentrated effort to brainwash a generation in order to maximize profit. Therefore, corporations can and should be held accountable, especially for targeting children. I'm not talking about the "Mad Men" age of advertising where a solid product was backed by a creative marketing campaign. It almost seems like it is now done in reverse? First, target the specific demographic, then figure out how to manipulate market, only to finally throw together a crappy product. Just my opinion..

I don't believe concepts like truth, justice and equality have been suppressed. In fact, I think they have become more and more prevalent in today's society. Truth - Edward Snowden and wikileaks exposing the us gov spying on citizens Justice - The heavy media attention and interest directed towards the Zimmerman court case Equality - The push towards the legalization of gay marriage I believe that noble values are even more apparent and being fought for more than ever in today's generation.

Snowden is indeed a prophet of truth. No point in arguing. But interest in Zimmerman case is not justice, it is just media being hungry for sensation. And I don't believe gay marriage is equality at all, beside it is just a herring for politicians and media.

I think that the trend towards the mindless materialism pointed by OP, that has been gaining strenght since the last hundred years, has sparked a reaction that goes in the opposite direction.
The technologies which have permitted the populace to be contented of a life full of distractions and no place for the mind's expansion, have also, paradoxically, allowed an incredibly easy and free access to education, and to the distribution and developpement of arts and science. These aspects of the modern world provides people with means to empower their minds and directly comprehend concepts like truth, justice, equality, and rationnal thoughts.
With this, I believe evolution will do its part. Using the means provided by the modern technologies to improve minds rather than for mindless distractions seems to me much more sustainable for both the individual and the civilisation. The unthinking majority will self-destruct, while the rest will build a free society (hint: by using cryptocurrencies to distance themself from those that try to bring them down).
