I am a rather new miner so maybe I am missing something obvious but here goes.

When I run my 3 Antminer S1 with Slush my average payout per block is something like 0.004, sometimes a little less sometimes a little more.

With the same machines working at BTC Guild after generating on average 400-500K shares is only 0.00024!

We are talking a BIG difference. Any ideas why?  Huh

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Give this a read, breaks down the difference in pools:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=104664.0

Slush uses a score system, so sometimes you'll get a high payout per block, but then there's sometimes a very long wait times between found blocks.

BTCGuild has lower variance, since it's a bigger pool, and has steady smaller payouts, which continue paying out even after you've left the pool depending on the length of shifts you put in.

Slush has less users so every block is devided on smaller amount of ppl. But, as there is less users / hash rate, blocks are found less often.
With Guild, there are moe ppl / more hash rate, so reward is smaller, but block come more often.

It's like: "Do you want meto give you 2$ every 2 days, or do you want 1$ every day"....same thing.
