Not meaning to call out this site but what is the ruling with .org domains, can you legally have adverts on the site or does it depend on country?  I always thought .org meant non profit or charity ?

It's the internet. There are no laws. I could buy a .org and put porn on it if I wanted.

ICANN technically controls the rules, but they're very very loose to say the least.

Also, there's a billion TLD now. You can get almost anything; bitcoinnutjob.ninja is probably for sale right now.

.ninja would be pretty terrible though right?

.com is always considered best?

.org seems decent - authoritative.

.net is like a value version of .com

.co.uk .us etc fine if only for that country

do people rate the rest of the .whatevers or doesnt this matter anymore ?

.org no longer has restrictions like non profit organizations/non commercial. Craigslist.org would be a popular example.

Well, ICANN just released a BUNCH of new TLDs this year, I believe.

I mean, we have EVERYTHING now. Here's just a few examples:

.properties
.club
.vc
.tv (old)
.io (oldish)
.social
.reviews
.community
.events
.rentals
.dance
.democrat
.condos
.cool
.sexy
.directory

----

Now looking at those domain names, you could pick up say: "housing.reviews" and make a website about reviews of rental properties or something.
Could do "newyork.social", and make a social site for new york people.

Could also do like "newyork.events" or something -- these are FULLY working domain names mind you. And they're easier to remember than "housingreviews.com or .org or .net".

Why not just register "is.sexy"? This way you could do a bunch of subdomains: "bob.is.sexy" "jeff.is.sexy".

Edit: Damn, taken Sad

I think they were bringing out .sex ones but haven't seen any. My favourite is the .co.ck domains. Registered in the Cook Islands  Cheesy.

I think that at this time not many people are paying attention to what is at the end of the internet address. I mean org com net .. whatever.
As long as the site is good it doesn't matter

I dont think there are any rules for any domains (as far as profit goes).

You can make as much money as you want off of a .org although its not ideal.

Why wouldn't an organization be allowed to have ads on their website? Just because they are non-profit does not mean they cannot charge money for things! Non-profit organizations need to pay for things, so they have to get money somehow.

There are no rules for .org domains. Ever heard of 4chan? Same goes for .com, .info, .net, and a few others. There are rules for .gov and .edu domains and some country-specific domains require you to either be in that country or to be connected to that country in some way however.
