Once upon a time, Google considered the possibility of creating its own currency called Google Bucks, much to the likes of the Bitcoin cash system. The statement came after Eric Schmidt, Google’s chairman, announced his keynote speech at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday.

The concept originally consisted of a “peer-to-peer” money system by which users can seamlessly transfer cash to each other via a hypothetical application. However, the project was eventually nixed because of the various laws about currency in different parts of the world which would deem the system illegal. The concept would also make it easier for potential money laundering scandals.

“Ultimately we decided we didn’t want to get into that because of these issues,” Schmidt said.

Btw Eric Schmidt is completely ignorant and utterly wrong about peer to peer currencies being illegal. Yes, trading and exchanging them for the government's fiat money might be considered illegal if you don't also follow their rules for doing so but otherwise using such a currency is perfectly legal.

My personality type: INTJ - please forgive my weaknesses (Not naturally in tune with others feelings; may be insensitive at times, tend to respond to conflict with logic and reason, tend to believe I'm always right)

I was just about to hunt that same thing down prior to getting to your post, the founder. Exactly what came to my mind, albeit I wasn't sure it was exactly “20-percent time”, but whatever that allotted time is, I was going to quote it nonetheless.

And while we're on the conspiracy theory du jour, was anybody from Google in attendance at that CIA meeting last year where Gavin was summoned?

There is already at least one Google developer using their 20% time as Bitcoin developers.

Well, at least this time you limited your sensationalist title to the forum post and you didn't post a press release with a sensationalist title on a spammy looking press release site like you did some time ago with the DRM thingy...

I'm all for pushing bitcoin forward, but let's just use facts to achieve that goal. Better leave the speculation on Bitcoinica and MtGox, where it belongs Cheesy

Well they're kinda right, considering bitcoin is most known for its use in the drug trade and child pornography circles its really not a surprise that they decided to steer well clear of any concept like this.

I think it was misleading a bit, but no more than any of Atlas's thread titles, even less so actually, because he was in fact implying that google did in fact invent the first Bitcoin.

The title implies that Google is claiming to have invented Bitcoin.

Google has not even acknowledged Bitcoin.  Having someone in a company of tens of thousands of people say, "hey this could be a good idea eventually" doesn't mean anything.

And digital trends is a horrible source of information.  Yuck, blogspam.
