Ubuntu the Worst OS I Hath Ever Used In My Life

Went to try out linux-Ubuntu for the first time as I'm not a geek programmer so Ubuntu should be more friendly from a former windows user; it's not...

I wanted to install Windows 7 theme into Ubuntu so I could work my way round and adapt gradually.

Not much to ask from an OS to change a few appearances/themes etc.

So I paste this string of nonsense into the Ubuntu Console

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install win-themes

and

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/icons
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install win-icons

and

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:freyja-dev/unity-tweak-tool-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool

and

sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://repo.mate-desktop.org/archive/1.8/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs) main"

and

wget -q http://mirror1.mate-desktop.org/debi...ve-keyring.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -

and

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mate-core mate-desktop-environment mate-notification-daemon

and

I then select the Unity tool from the lol dash to select the themes that I want.

and what do I get for my efforts?

Absolutely nothing...

The icons change to windows lookalike yes that's great however... the - [] X controls are on the left hand side of the window, the menu/taskbar is locked to the ceiling, there is no programs list; instead I hath to go through the lol dash and select apps and scroll all the way down to run a program I want.

In addition you cannot move icons around and drag them to the desktop, you hath to go to great lengths to do the most simplistic of things.

To troll it all off the system reverts back to its default theme when I restart Ubuntu.

At this point in time I just want to crawl under a rock and just die this system hath ruined my life and my afternoon I was just getting into it.

The only reason I got into Ubuntu is because of Bitcoin security, however I think I'll abandon this little venture and just use the OS for offline wOllets as it's supposedly more secure than windows.

Calm down, it's just not for you ubuntu, change os and you'll be fine Windows and osx have great security, just don't download bad shit and don't visit porn sites


Ubuntu is fine, I use it as a spare OS on my usb stick, but I agree it should be more user friendly.

The latest ubuntu has a sleek design, great touches here and there, it's still not as userfriendly as osx and windows, but I'm sure that will change in the near future.

I'm still happy with my win7, to me this is by far the best windows os that I have ever used.

Windows 8 is ok on a tablet but it's not acceptable to get redirected to the desktop when you open certain apps, they should fix this asap.

I like linux mint a lot better too. I think a lot of people given the two side by side would choose mint. I'm not so sure I like the direction Ubuntu has gone with Unity. Maybe for a tablet or something...

If you don't know how to program or even want to learn, why did you even try to use Ubunutu?  Was it because it's free?  Mac and Windows are much better consumer OS's. 
If you don't even know how to use the OS, then switching to it for increased security is a bit of a pipe dream.

as a noob to linux myself i do like Debian and Ubuntu and dont find them that hard to work with once you have the desktop GUI installed just takes a bit of getting use to. ubuntu 12.04 is far far better than 13.10 and 14.04 mainly because it bloody works.

as for security there all pretty much the same if you keep to sites  you know. reason Linux gets a better security rating is because alot less people use linux than windows and hackers are pretty lazy so why target the few when they can target the many.

Mac os is well mac over priced and good at a hand full of things.

I like lubuntu, it has aptitude which is really nice but not the lol dash as you call it.

I don't like the unity interface very much, try lubuntu, the interface already resembles windows and it runs faster.

Linux for real heavy lifting.  If you want to surf the net, just use Windows.  Come on now!

Yeah... if you're going to use a linux distro, just get something pre-packaged for exactly what you want. "RTFM" isn't a trivial task and Ubuntu is a lot less exciting now than when I first found it, reading all the promises and potential. We have BAMT and good tutorials for Tails, now; Ubuntu doesn't really have a particularly attractive feature-set for our community, I think.

Linux Lite is based on Ubuntu 13. It is tweaked in ways that makes it act like Windows in a lot of ways. Yet, it uses Ubuntu for its updates.

Personally, the time I have spent working with Ubuntu, applied to Linux Lite, has produced much better results for me on LL. LL isn't perfect. But it is easier than Ubuntu. My opinion.

Ubuntu is great and it would a little difficult for you to make the switch, you can make it look like windows a little but you can't change the way it's used, it is very user friendly, once you get the hang of it and much secure than windows but if you still don't like it, just use windows.

I love the title of this, the worst OS is Ubuntu (really anything not Windows is what he is talking about) posted in a mining forum.  If it wasn't for the many versions of *nix, mining wouldn't be possible.  How many Windows based miners do you see manufactures selling?  I think there is a grand total of 0.  I would love to see a manufacture try to sell a Windows 8/2012 as the controller for a miner hahahaha!

Just because someone doesn't know how to use it, they have to say it is the worst...

For surfing the net, use whatever.  Doing anything serious, use *nix.  If you look at the top 500 supercomputers in the world, 497 are *nix based.  The 2 that are Windows based are either Microsoft themselves, or Microsoft assisted their setup.  Anybody serious about computing would take the time to learn how to use *nix.  Everybody else, just keep using whatever as it doesn't matter.
