So I bought a referent HD 5850 1 GB recently, I can only overclock it to 900 MHz gpu core, anything above and it will crash (using BAMT), memory clocks do not affect it, tried 190, 300 and 450, when I raised the gpu core clock to 925 the card only submitted 5 shares before crashing. At 910 same thing happens, at 900 it is 24/7 stable, GPU temperature is aroung 60C with 45% fan.
All my other 5850s (non-referent, sapphire, sapphire extreme, etc.) are stable at 945-960 with stock voltage.

Am I the only one with such a sucky card?

I just got mine the yesterday and noticed the same thing.  Mine is a Sapphire 1GB 5850.  Didn't get much time to play with it yet, but the problem is unnerving.

900 MHz seems fine for a 5850. I never went that high. 940 should be close to 390 MH/s. Not too bad for a 5850.

860-940 here, 6 5850's.

900 isn't a sucky card, it's average.

At least for me, 5850's run at a lower voltage (1088mV) than 5870's (1163mV), so it's not surprising that they don't clock as high really.

Isn't the stock clock like 725?  900 is almost 25% overclock.

Seems like my card is normal then.
5870 run at a higher voltage because they have more SIMDs, TMUs and shaders.

I have 4 5850s that I am lucky to overclock past 825 without crashing anymore, of course, this is after a year of mining them at 850-900. I don't know why the degradation, but it is certainly noticeable.

Look up electromigration.

High voltages + temps = reduced OC ability over time.
