TalkCoin, a new 'second generation' crypto currency, thinks communication isn't secure enough. And they've built their coin around this idea.
Talkcoin allows secure peer-to-peer communications by merging a crypto currency and blockchain with a messaging system.
How Does It Work?
The whole thing is built on Talkcoin's blockchain. The blockchain - a key innovation made by Satoshi - allows for time stamping of any data sent across the network. The time stamping means that anyone can verify whether data was actually transferred by checking the blockchain, a copy of which is kept by most users.
This means that those concerned with privacy do not need to trust third parties to not change or even spy on their communications, like Google or Facebook could.
Privacy and anonymity, of course, are a matter of degrees and if the NSA is after you, they can probably get you. This kind of tech however is certainly a step forward.
TalkCoin developers are also working on a feature that will allow for encrypted chat. It's still in the beginning phases, but the idea is to make it work similar to PGP messaging where only those with a secret password can open the message they have received.
For example, this password could be the same as your wallet pass, allowing communications only between you and other public addresses that you add as 'contacts'.
TalkCoin is not the first crypto currency to implement a chat feature and strive towards encrypted messaging, NXT coin has also made great strides towards this goal. These type of secure communication cryptocoins however are very rare, giving TalkCoin a solid competitive edge in the cryptocoin market.
Other Features
Messaging is not the only way in which TalkCoin stands out. The network also allows for decentralized voting over block rewards. This feature is also fairly rare and according to TalkCoin developer Andy, the only other coin to have implemented this feature has been HeavyCoin.
Decentralized voting alone has vast applications, anywhere from securing government election votes to determining market attitudes in crowd funding, and much more. Such implementations are for the most part theoretical. However in the world of crypto, innovation moves at light speeds, making the above worthy considerations.
Currently, the main function of the voting system in TalkCoin is to allow for what Andy calls "democratic block reward voting".
Unlike most Altcoins, TalkCoin doesn't have a hard coded limit on the amount of talkcoins to be created. This doesn't necessarily mean exponential inflation like that of fiat currencies, but rather that there is no end to potential profits from mining. Talkcoin users can vote twice a week to democratically determine the block rewards. A limit of 10% changes for block rewards between each voting session was very recently announced.
Andy points out that "Investors are incentivized to vote for a lower block reward -to lower inflation-, and miners are incentivized to vote for a higher reward". They are forever striving for equilibrium.

TalkCoin uses the algorithm Nist5 to secure its communications. Nist5 is a combination of the five finalist of the 2007 Nist Sha-3 competition.
TalkCoin currently has decentralized chats in 3 language channels - English, Russian & Chinese.
