The grue lurks in the darkest places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

Seems like this process is fairly secure (split-key generation). However, is there any fee or payment needed?

No, just giving back to the community.  But won't be instant, might take some time.

This way a third party has your private key which is a big no no. they can just input private key and withdraw from your wallet.

No, split-key generation is being used here. Properties of elliptic curve cryptography allow you to keep a private key, and provide the vanity searcher the corresponding public key. They search until their hash(their public+your public) has the right prefix in base 58, then they provide you the private key they found.

You then combine their private key half (which they provide to you) with the one you kept secret.

To be more secure, you can download bitadddress.org to an offline computer to generate your Public and Private keys.

Like rarkenin said, we use split-key generation, nobody but you have the first part of the private key.

My mistake I see now that is does use that. thanks for pointing that out.

No he can't if i am not mistaken this if FBI silk road seized bitcoins address and he doesn't steal wallet priv keys he just generates something like 1yakuza(random numbers) public keys and just gives you part of the priv key the other part must be yours.

The difficulty (and expected time to get a match) goes up 58x for every character added.
You could indeed try getting the private key for that FBI address, but the success chance would be infinitesimal small. Smiley

Sorry, not sure that's possible.

I expect this kind of question/request from a newbie, not from a Sr. Member.

Sorry, not sure that's possible.

I expect this kind of question/request from a newbie, not from a Sr. Member.

of course it's possible

if you can wait several quadrillion years, give or take several orders of magnitude.

With my computer it would take about 6.7 *10^29 years just to have a 50% chance of finding a match for 16modtb1c9UChJtAZr6m4hWk47 (you'll still miss AVsoSRZD)

in total you'd need about 6.5*10^43 years to have a 50% chance of having found the key for a specific address. (With my current computer, which is an i7)

Feeling lucky?

for the amazingly low price of $0.01/day i will promise to leave it running for the next 10^50 years. Please pay up front, and also i can't guarantee my computer will last that long, or even the universe....
