Recieving 220Mhash/s on a AMD RADEON 6990M dedicated GPU?

It seems way to slow from what I was expecting. And my I7 Quad core is generating only 2.5 Mh/s while I've read others recieving around 13 MH/s on the same system.
Running it 24/7 these last couple of days and using the Slush Pool I seem to be averaging..... .07 per day bitcoins a day...


This is a brand new Alienware MX17 laptop and on the hardware chart comparisons the estimates ranged from 700-950Mhs.


I'm using the GUIMiner with -v -w128 -f 1. Have the most recent SDK and CL software installed.

Not sure what those flags mean but it is what other's have suggested.

Later I'd like to overclock my GPU and add custom cooling but right now suspect that something basic is wrong with my setup?

6990m vs. 6990 are two completely different beasts.

Same goes for mobile processors.

plus cpu mining is only good for alt-coins such as litecoin

I wouldn't mine on a laptop because it will get way to hot. You are running the risk of frying your very expensive laptop. Laptops are not made to mine for Bitcoins.
Check your temps with MSI afterburner.

6990m < 6870... 6870's get anywhere between 230-275m/hash.  So 220m/hash is probably right where you could expect it.

I am wondering if you are perhaps only mining on one of the cores with guiminer?

I have not used guiminer in almost a year , maybe load up another instance of guimer and click the box for the gpu listed and see if there is a second one there?

Better yet download CGMINER and run that instead

for your 6990m you will want to do it like this (these are optimum 6990 settings for cgminer)

get to a command prompt
go to the cgminer directory

cgminer -o http://pool.com:8332 -u username -p password -o http://backuppool.com:8332 -u username -p password -I -9 --gpu-powertune 20 --gpu engine 900 --gpu-memclock 775 --gpu-autofan

I guarantee you will get better speeds using cgminer with the command I just gave you

The 6990m is basically a 6770 and is single GPU, i have a M17x R3 here and get about 240mhs when overclocked but any more and it outdoes the cooling capacity of the laptop, its nothing like the 6990 desktop GPU

Is your M17x and r1/2/3? as they all had different model Core i7's

damn your right, I thought it was a dual gpu like the desktop version but I just read the specs, I was wrong sorry.

You still might benefit from running CGMINER

also what version of CCC is installed?

try using 11.9 with the sdk 2.5.xx it comes with - it should improve your speed a little bit if your using a more recent CCC/SDK just make sure you uninstall it completely.

Installing ATi's drivers on laptops is never so simple, 11.x series drivers cause all sorts of BSOD's and similar, i would suggest the latest 12.2, im running them ok but you will get a bsod on install

my laptop has a 6650m but ive never tried to mine with it, not sure if its even possible... good gaming card though

6990m < 6870... 6870's get anywhere between 230-275m/hash.  So 220m/hash is probably right where you could expect it.

Ummm... 230 MHash/s can be easily achieved with a lowly hd6770 card (800 SPs, overclocked to 990MHz).
Mobile devices just aren't designed for tasks as compute-intensive mining.

Thank you for all the replies. A lot of good information on here.

I should of remembered the difference between mobile and normal tower pc graphic cards but I guess with this being a "gaming computer" i was counting on it hitting higher targets than that.

Fortunately this did come with some overclocking functionality built in. With some help with Trixx I added an extra 20% onto the GPU cpu clock which only resulted in about a 4 degree temp increase
and now i keep it well ventilated and having noticed any artifacts. My Mhz/s are at 261 which is about all it'll give up.

Looks like most of my activities in the BCoin market will involve buying and selling as hardware investments feel a little too late. If only I'd arrived on the scene about 3 years sooner!

Even with open frames, lots of airflow, and high rpm fans full desktop cards take a pounding of 24/7 mining operation.   You WILL kill your laptop guaranteed.  It is only a matter of time and given the cost of a top of the line Alienware laptop the coins you make before you kill it probably won't even cover the shipping for a repair.

+2. Don't do it. Even desktop cards burn out regularly fairly quickly after 24/7 mining (burnt a couple after 4 months).
