This question has been asked for ages. It seems AMD have more cores and clock speed but intel has more effieient cores and hyper threading (not sure though). So what do you prefer or have. Who wins, you decide.

Intel all day, everyone is runnin I5/7 chips now a days.

The only good thing AMD brings is bargain chips for the low priced builds.

Intel has better $/performance for gaming. AMD has better $/performance for non-gaming computations.

I think it would be good if people could justify their opinion with technical detail to make this more interesting.

Yeah I've never understood the Intel vs AMD argument to me things look pretty close right now, I remember people saying AMD processors just weren't as good awhile back but that seems to be changing.

Intel all the way.

Intel puts more money into R&D than is worth each and every year.

Intel is probably years and years ahead, but aren't releasing their products because it'd just destroy AMD and they'd become a monopoly.

They're playing the nice guys here, imho.

Amd is cheap and offers almost the same speed, if you dont care about money then go with intel.

I do not have a preference. Most desktop/laptop manufacturers only make Intel based systems. I could go out of the way to look for an AMD system, but I don't have a reason to. CPU performance is not my main criteria when choosing systems, I would rather have a lower tier CPU and spend more on memory.

The difference between AMD and intel for gaming.
Firstly, you need to decide what your priorities are, and what you will use the PC for.
Things such as: light gaming, heavy gaming, basic work (e.g. MS Office), heavy work (e.g. video editing, 3d modeling).
For the most part in current games the biggest difference will be made by the selection of the GPU. Get a great GPU + worse CPU rather than worse GPU + great CPU.
The AMD FX CPU's have many cores, which are weaker.

intel i5's have less cores, which are stronger.
The intel's consequently have better performance per core. In older games, the intels perform much better as those games are optimised for good performance with only a few cores (single-threading).
In newer games, the AMD FX's really shine due to the introduction of games using more cores (multi-threading).

Hope you can understand if you have budget for gaming pc over then 500 dollars you can go with Intel and buy a good gpu .. as i mentioned above you have can get a Amd processor but good GPU .. Smiley

Really depend on what you do.

For GPU mining, AMD will do fine.

For performance wise, intel beats AMD.

Is there really that much difference between them? I bet most couldn't notice the difference between comparable chips.

In honesty i think you get what you pay for if you want very good performance on a realistic budget AMD is the best but if you want all out performance intel is the best.

Cyrix FTW!  Whoops, had a flashback to 1996 lol.  Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

I had AMD machines back in the Athlon XP and Duron days, even an Opteron 144.  Been Intel more or less before and after.

Yeah I know.  I bought one Cyrix chip and board and it couldn't even install Win 95 without blue screening several times.  I swapped the board twice and the CPU once and continued to have problems.  Went to an AMD setup and had the machine running in 2 hours.

Sometimes competition for the sake of competition is not so good  Cheesy
