The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

18 Bitcoins roughly translated to about 95 dollars. The second edition nook, new, sells for $100 dollars and on the B&N website, it is $80 with free shipping (they sent a $20 off coupon via email to subscribed users). I am in no way saying that a transaction like this would be a rip-off, but basically what you are asking is $95 for an outdated, used, rooted nook when a new nook is currently available for 80.
