Pope Francis: 'About 2%' of Catholic clergy paedophiles

The Pope said that abuse of children was like "leprosy" infecting the Church, according to the Italian La Repubblica newspaper.

The BBC's David Willey in Rome says there is often a studied ambiguity in Pope Francis' off-the-cuff statements.

He wants to show a more compassionate attitude towards Church teaching than his predecessors, but this can sometimes cause consternation among his media advisers, our correspondent adds.

I find it hard to believe that the Pope would have made this comment. It may be true but it is highly inflammatory.

I think I read on the news that it was one in 50 priests. That's a huge number.

It was interesting to see that he's looking into the possibility of letting priests marry women. I wonder if this would stop them abusing children? It's not natural to be celebrate and can only cause problems. I'm not even sure if there was anything in the bible strictly about it either.

Pope Francis is one of the best popes to ever be ordained. He does not care about what people think he is not advertising Catholicism like it is a product that he is trying to sell. He openly admits to problems and then tries his best to tackle them.

Would have thought it would be higher than 2%, about the time the Vatican stopped covering up all of their child abuse.

Priest is the perfect profession for a paedophile. Adult sexual relationships are forbidden, High percentage of others like you to to help protect you, trusted in your community, and easy access to children.

2%, that sounds like a low estimation.

I was born and raised Catholic and I still kinda follow along on religious things but I take a more spiritual vision when dealing w/ my perceived God. It's kind of hard to just up and ditch the religion I've been a part of all my life considering I went to their schools from early on through graduating college. The conservative Catholics don't like this Pope and the liberal ones tend to be cool with him. Tho, I'm at the point now where much of the religious teachings I've had over the years have faded and I'm left w/ just The Golden Rule. My major beef w/ this Pope is him talking all this spreading the wealth socialist talk when he should be preaching non-stop for the USA to chill out in the middle east.

It may well be just 2 percent but I have my doubts. I would not be surprised if the 2 percent is the real number but the real issue is it is the top 2 percent of clergy members with real power are the ones that have the issue with pedophilia.

If this is true, this is really shocking fact!
I think that Catholic church have this problem because of their celibate tradition.
Other churches, where priests can marry and have families, don0't have so much problem in this area like Catholics.
Hopefully Pope Francis will do something about this and allow catholic priests to marry to.

Of the 660 arrested, 39 were registered sex offenders but the vast majority of suspected paedophiles were off the police's radar. Those arrested include doctors, teachers, scout leaders, care workers and former police officers.
