blockchain.info never really recovered from that one outage they had, the one where amounts were shown multiplied by 2, etc... Funny how everyone's darling can, after a small but shocking incident, become the laughing stock of all of Bitcoinland.

Bitcoin nodes provide decentralization. The more nodes, the more difficult it would for anyone to shut it down.

Bitcoin nodes provide connectivity to the network. If we expect users to grow, nodes should grow accordingly. If the number of users is much higher than the number of nodes, clients may not be able to connect. Setting up a node is one of the most visible ways to support Bitcoin.

Can't disagree more. One more node is a bit more decentralization of the Bitcoin network.

I guess I didn't look at it that way thanks for opening up my eyes! I'll look into it again as I did quite a bit of research a while back on it and now all of that is lost so I'll have to look at it again. (was looking to host multiple nodes on vps)

Only if port 8333 is open...

Find your ip from http://whatismyipaddress.com and look up your Ip and port 8333 here: http://www.subnetonline.com/pages/network-tools/online-port-scanner.php to see if its online.

or if you are pegged at 8 connections you are most likely not acting as a fullnode.

If not contact your ISP and ask them to open up TCP port 8333 .

I run a full node 24/7, but having problems with my ISP keeps changing my external IP address. This happens at random, perhaps every few days, other times twice a day.

This upsets the node, causing connections to drop to 8. Only way is to restart daemon. Then I'm normally connected to 40 - 50 peers.
Until they change my IP again.

Sounds like you want a cron job (or Windows equivalent) to shut down and start up your client every so often.

Every company is going to have their fair share of road bumps...Bitcoin companies are not immune to this.   I thought Blockchain.info handled it pretty well...at least they got right in front of it and addressed the public. 

I don't think they have become the laughing stock by any means...

That is what blockchain.info node is connected to...

This is only a small minority of the nodes that are present on the network. There are a lot of nodes coming onto and disconnecting from the network all the time (mostly people running QT). IIRC there are roughly 5k nodes on the Bitcoin network
