huh? i'd imagine israel doing this as a way of sending a message to hamas.. whether it will be effective in doing so, i'm not quite sure.. because it seems like hamas doesn't really care about the lives of ordinary citizens; instead, it seems like they use their people as shields.

if israel doesn't respond with might and force, they might appear timid, which would open the way for hamas to continue attacking them. why not attack israel if they end up doing nothing?

It is really the terrorists in Gaza that are killing the innocent people as they are keeping weapons stockpiles and soldiers housed in schools and hospitals and civilians' houses.

The people of Gaza will only be safe when the Hamas terrorists are no longer in charge there. Hamas has a stated goal of destroying the State of Israel and does their best to kill as many Israelis as they have the power to. If Israel returned the favor, Gaza would be lifeless in a few hours. Think about who is the one who actually is trying to kill people for the sake of their beliefs and who is just trying to keep terrorists from killing their people.

Even Al Jazeera, a clearly biased news source when it comes to this subject, included the caveat that Israel contends it was in fact Palestinian rocket fire that hit the building. Do you think Israel is stupid enough to intentionally fire on a UN facility?

The Hamas leaders do care, they intentionally put weapons and tunnels in areas with lots of civilians. It helps them keep the caches partially hidden and protected, and a bonus is when the civilians are killed they get to complain about it to the international community and hopefully get funding from rich Arabs from other countries, which is the main reason this current situation has happened.

The Gaza health ministry told the Reuters news agency that Israeli fire had killed at least 15, and injured 150, at the school in Beit Hanoun on Thursday. .

An Israeli military source however told Al Jazeera that Palestinian rocket fire had been detected in the area and that it might have fallen short and hit the shelter.

Al Jazeera's Stefanie Dekker, reporting from Gaza, said she was unable to reach the school after the attack due to heavy Israeli shelling. No one she had spoken to in Gaza believed the deaths were caused by a Palestinian rocket.

The reporter was near the field, so an eyewitness has more impact than what the military source said.

"We gave the Israelis the precise GPS coordinates of the Beit Hanoun shelter. We were trying to coordinate a window [for evacuation] and that was never granted," he said.

They were trying to negotiate an evacuation with the Israeli military but were ignored leading one to believe that it could well have been Israel.

(Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed alarm on Wednesday that 20 rockets found hidden in a United Nations school in the Gaza Strip had gone missing and directed the world body to deploy experts to deal with the situation.

The main U.N. agency in Gaza, UNRWA, found the rockets in one of its vacant schools a week ago. It found a second batch in a vacant school on Tuesday, but said in a statement that because staff were withdrawn quickly, they were "unable to confirm the precise number."

If that intel is correct there is a reason the rockets could have targeted that building as well.

One problem I see is that the rift in the relationship between Israel and Palestine has gotten so far that neither side wishes to use diplomacy, honest conversation, to figure out a real resolution. It's like a bad forced marriage and divorce isn't an option. When either side makes the slightest comment or action that borders on offensive to the other side the "offended" party seeks retaliation.

One of these sides needs to seek peace as the only solution and be "the better man" about it going forward. At the most they'll find that peace and at the least they'll earn the respect of the rest of the world (and the other party will be seen increasingly as out of hand, off base, and "wrong".)

This situation is unresolved already for to long, over 60 years, since 1948 or 1945.
Positions from both sides are so extreme and different that it looks that is impossible that they make any kid of peace agreement, at least not in the near future and not with current political leaders.
Sometimes I feel that both sides just pretend that they seek peace but in fact this situation helps them both politically to stay in power.
Very sad, tragic situation but I don't see any fast solution.

I agree with this.
Nobody should use religion as reason to harm others.
Religion talks about peace and love, not killing or harming others.
Israel have political motivation in this conflict, not religious one.
