Got a new rig, with an r9 270 in it. Looking to mine something, even just for fun. Is it even feasible now, and if so, what algo?

Yes look for coins with X11 or X13 algorythm.
Do not do scrypt in the summer unless you want to
heat your house, lol.  Scrypt coins are now
mined with Asics, see my sig below. GPUs are
mining X11 and X13 coins now.

Maybe with a single AMD R9 295x...lol

Seriously, consider hashing CryptoNote coins, BBR, DarkCash, Whirlcoin, Saffron, People's Currency (PPL) or whatever coin is profitable enough.

Mine some pandacoin:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=568529.0

I recommend you use the scrypt version of the pool as it is more profitable than the x11 atm. This coin has been around for a few months and has held strong through massive dumps. They have 11 active devs and backed by a great community. They are announcing and releasing some pretty innovative stuff come August 30th and the price is expected to soar afterwards. Probably be your best bet at getting some decent profits since most x11/x13/x15 coins are the same shitty pump and dump coins like all the scrypt coins were. Though PND is innovative and active so it will be the diamond in the turd.

None of the algo is making profit now. You can sell your r9 270 or use it for gaming..

Single GPU mining can be fun just for experimentation but it will be far away from profitability.

If your just looking to mine for fun then yes, x11/13 would be the easiest since heat is less of a problem. If your looking for some thing different go with cryptonotes some of the newer ones are still low diff so you should be able to mine a fair amount of coins with a 270.

You asked if one GPU mining is feasible.

The problem isn't lying with 1 or 10 GPUs, but rather that generally speaking, GPU mining isn't profitable anymore unless you're really vigilant as Amph said.

Setting and forgetting doesn't cut it anymore (for the most part).

Okay, got it. Thanks for a straight answer. Now extension, was it ever?

Oh yes, there were a few different times where gpu mining was VERY profitable, but I'm afraid those times are gone, I for one, am selling all of my gpus, about 17 of them, so that I can buy asics. They are pretty much the only way to mine anymore, and even they aren't that profitable, but I just like mining, so I will continue to mine. There were times when I made 75 a day with only 3 280x's, then times where those same 280x's made me 1BTC in a day when MAX came out. Good times, but those times are long gone. Sucks for new miners, but it is what it is.

Yes, I remember when max was $10 a coin, have had better times day trading, (Darkcoin Wink) but burned out for that now. Having a job that pays in bitcoin is good enough for me!

Feasible if you have it already at hand. Not if you are still going to buy it and piece it together. Better buy coins directly than have it spent on rig.
