yes and no. yes in that you can use it like a controller hook up a usb hub then buy mining gear to mine with. no in that it is not fast to mine coins at a profit with out buying other gear to attach to it. maybe you can mine dark coins but btc no ltc no if you want a low cost asic mining gear for about 60 bucks there is a thread here crazy guy is the seller I will find a link https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=612390.0look into his 57.99 usd item the r-box he has a website with paypal. I am pretty sure it works with your pc if you have windows 7 on it.

No computer is good for mining.
You can attach ASICs to it if you are interested , but your computer will wear out before it earns you anything.
Computers are not good for mining anything except extremely new cryptocurrencies , with new PoW systems.

Forget mining, it's not profitable anymore for normal users. If you want to have some profit just buy bitcoins from an exchange and hold them long term.

A bit of a description below:
2.7 GHz Dual Core AMD Athalon 5200+ Processor (comparable to Intel Core 2 Duo) - 4 GB DDR2 Ram - 140GB Hard Drive - DVD-RW Drive (Pioneer brand) - ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card with dual VGA cable (dual display capable) - Asus Case with 2 front USB 2.0 ports - ASROCK GLAN motherboard Note: running Linux Mint, a modern, elegant, open source, and intuitive operating system
So, is this computer ok for mining coins?
Maybe one of the altcoins, but BTC or LTC is not possible with this set up. You can get BTC trough other ways, see this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=525183.0 or simply buy them. This is the kind of set up you need for mining these days http://www.sikharchives.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/bitcoin_mining_a.jpg

Maybe one of the altcoins, but BTC or LTC is not possible with this set up. Both OP's CPU and GPU are quite dated, and so I don't think he should mine any coins, not even CPU or GPU coins. The hashrate he can get would be extremely low, and it simply doesn't worth the time and electricity.

Bitcoin can only be profitably mined with specialized ASIC equipment so forget about mining Bitcoin with that setup unless you want to buy an ASIC. I would assume the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro isn't too bad. I remember it was absolutely the best card that money could buy back in 2003. It might be possible to mine GPU coins with it but I'm not sure how it stacks up with newer generation cards which probably now far outclass it. Might be worth a shot though. Perhaps you could try mining CPU coins too. Your processor doesn't seem too terrible but I doubt you would see a profit when other people are using far more powerful/efficient i5s and i7s to mine. Here is a list of some of them if you're interested: http://www.cpucoinlist.com/

Sadly I would say no. I suggest getting asic's if want to mine.
Your GPU/CPU are not going to bring much in money from mining.

Its currently 2014, every single miner should have one of those new cards, not one that is eleven year old. Furthermore, it does not support OpenCL and alt coins isn't as stable.

I dont think any computer is fit to mine alone, unless you are using it to install the mining pool software etc.

This is definitely true nowadays - at least for SHA-256 coins such as Bitcoin, but it wasn't case before SHA-256 ASICs arrived in 2013. Someone even mined hundreds of bitcoins on an old Pentium 4 back in the early days of Bitcoin. And even up until 2013, people were using high-end gaming rigs with expensive GPUs to mine.

If you want to mine bitcoin OP, you need to buy specialized hardware (an ASIC). A general purpose computer is now obsolete for mining Bitcoin, ASICS are hundreds of thousands of times faster than PC's. There may be some altcoins you can mine however if you want to do that. You can sell them for Bitcoin and "mine bitcoin" that way. Back in 2003 bitcoin was not even thought of yet, let alone invented.
Actually you are wrong... twice! He meant the GPU came out in 2003. But also the general idea of Bitcoin was thought of before 2003, Satoshi was just the first to publish a fully working client for an idea people had been talking about since the late 90's. http://www.weidai.com/bmoney.txt - written in 1998 http://unenumerated.blogspot.com/2005/12/bit-gold.html - also worked on since around 1998

The CPU doesn't have the instruction set capable of mining any decent CPU coin. It also can't run a 64 OS so no mining of modern altcoins.
The GPU doesn't support OpenCL so it's useless too.
The only thing it might be good for is hosting an ASIC - he would have to buy an ASIC and mine with that (see the link for CrazyGuy's sale).

Not really,
It can mine but not very fast believe no GPU either so cannot really do much. So pretty much worthless as DrG said.
