I"ve got an HD5850. Is there truly any point left in mining, or will I be pissing money away?

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

I think I'd try LTC mining if I had a nice GPU.  Obviously I'd be converting it to BTC at every moment though.

Buy a better gpu, hell even a 750ti can mine X11/X13 pretty good,
but you aren't going to make much without a farm or asic.

Even if you have decent GPU , LTC  mining won't even ROI for months or year in the scrypt Asic era.
