I woke up and saw this email in my inbox:

Hi John Doe

Thanks for your email.  I wanted you to be among the first to know that as of this morning, the Wikimedia Foundation is accepting Bitcoin donations!

Later today, you'll receive a generic email from the Foundation with the news, but I'm hoping that my note reaches you first.  If your offer is still good, we're definitely interested, and we would be very grateful for your generosity and your patience!

You can donate here: https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Ways_to_Give/en#bitcoin.

Best,
Caitlin

Another great news for Bitcoin community and another step in becoming mainstream.
We need many more such small success in order to became famous and popular in global Internet community.
In fact Bitcoin is perfect tool for donations online!

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

Curious how many people now actually donate. There where whole threads filled with people mailing Wikimedia about accepting Bitcoin, let's hope enough of them now actually donate and this doesn't turn out awkward, like: Wikimedia received over 15.000 Mails to accept Bitcoin, upon actually doing so they received a total of 12 Bitcoin donation worth > $100.

tl.dr.: If you bugged them about accepting Bitcoin you should really donate now and don't be cheap like donating 50 cents.

All previous versions of currency will no longer be supported as of this update

jeez, took them long enough. i donated to them via USD a few years ago, but i don't think i'd do it again.. they have the opportunity to accept btc for a long time now, risk-free.. yet they didn't (even though they were hurting for donations).

This is good for Wikipedia. I'm happy for them because now more people around the world can support them.

Did you tell Rassah at Bitcoin100 so they can get a donation?

I believe I'm on record in stating that such would be the case, albeit I was in reference to Wikipedia proper, but would have no qualms with having my promise fulfill if such is warranted. Please let me/us know if this is outta line.

Please voice any opinions as to why they SHOULD NOT receive a $1,000 USD via BTC endowment from Bitcoin100.

BTC is fast payment method without fee. It could be used for anonymous donation. It is fine to just give out your donation address. We send BTC to it without filling the form simply. We can track the address and know where the BTC is going.

Ha, wow awesome news! Didn't someone give their boss, this Jimmy guy some BTC? I wonder if that changed his mind. Usually they would reply in a way that discredited Bitcoin when you asked them whether they plan on accepting it.

Just tell Rassah that you want it done now or you're going to repost his coffee table pictures all over the web with his address and phone number. Seriously, I don't think anyone would complain if they received an endowment.

The way I'm reading it is that the Wikimedia Foundation IS the charitable arm of Wikipedia, ergo Wikipedia proper is indeed accepting bitcoin donations.

Also, somebody dig up that thread depicting where a BT user amassed donations for Wikipedia, holding them in escrow till when this day came about, for it has.

Also2, somebody put a bug in Roger Ver's ear, suggesting he run a 24 hour (?) matching contribution campaign. We'll even let him attach any of his various concerns to the stunt, for that's what marketing's all about.

I declare it's official: http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2014/07/30/wikipedia-begins-taking-donations-in-bitcoin/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

Due to a promise I made a year or so ago, Bitcoin 100 should endow Wikipedia $1,000 USD via BTC.

Also, again, would somebody be so kind as to hunt down that thread depicting a BT user amassing BTC donations held in escrow till this day that has now arose? I honestly don't recall the user's name.

Im unhappy because the donation form is too intrusive Sad I have to supply personal info instead of being able to donate fast and anonymously....
