Wikipedia is one of the most heavily trafficked sites on the web, and seems a natural fit for bitcoin as a payments system, seeing both are powered by a decentralized network of users, so it’s a wonder it took this long.

In a press release on its website, Wikimedia explained that it had been asked in the past to take bitcoin, and those requests combined with recent events, including the IRS guidance on bitcoin, convinced it to revisit the cryptocurrency. “There is [now] a clear understanding of how to legally manage it

Very cool, while it may not be a "merchant" adopting btc, wikipedia is a huge site which is up there in the top 10 sites worldwide.  This should help with public awareness and educating people on the benefits of BTC.

I use their website so often I'd feel compelled to give, if it wasn't run by a bunch of spiteful high-functioning autists.

By the end of next month at the latest we will have permanently left behind 3 digits. You can quote me on this.

I use it so often I felt compelled to give even though it's run by a bunch of spiteful high-functioning autists. So now I have. They wouldn't let me pay if I didn't fill out a form with name and address. I have no idea why.

The actual donation is waaay to hidden from home page.
Go direct to https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Ways_to_Give/en#bitcoin

The full name/address stuff btw is US KYC regulations placed on coinbase.

Finally is all I can say its good that Wikimedia is now accepting Bitcoin donations not just for their T-shirt swag.
All I can really say about that is that first it was the store but now they are starting to use it for more purposes
I remember the debate in wiki on this ^_^.

Also wikipedia is definitely a site I would support so much data sometimes a bit off but that's what sourcing is for its a great starting point.
