My friend has a sister who has been in a coma for over 5 weeks. I'm not certain of the exact cause, and not expecting "professional medical advice":

She will probably have severe brain damage?
Do you know anyone who was in a coma for a long time and actually "came back?"
Should the "libertarians" (and everyone else) be forced to pay for all of this?  Shocked

Kind of a vague question, but comas are unpredictable in themselves. Is there a chance? Of course. I hope she does.

I was in a coma for a month, sine people have been for years. A coma doesn't cause brain damage it is caused by brain damage. That being said, it depends on what the cause was. Best thing would be to stay as positive as possible, good vibes always helps, really does.

seems like the best she can hope for is a full recovery.. but with a hell of a lot of muscle atrophy.

People wake up after 20 years in coma too http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-187920/Coma-man-wakes-19-years.html

May God bless the patient with a happy and healthy life. Majority of us here dont care about our health and think about money 24-7 but the reality is without health there is no wealth.

The coma is the human body's way to heal with traumatic injury.  Unfortunately sometimes the sensors in the brain don't go off when healing has reached a plateua and the brain just sits in a locked in state.

Unfortunately during this time the body will atrophy and the organs will age at an accelerated rate.  It's possible she might wake up again, but if after 5 weeks she had not the chance is quite low - it doesn't decrease/increase with time - only thing that changes is the peripheral body will atrophy.

Obviously all depends on the severity of the injury and damage to the brain, but the odds usually aren't good.

I recommend watching the above Louis Theroux documentary which covers some coma victims. Most people don't wake up from comas, but surprisingly one does whilst they were shooting the episode even after the doctors had just told the family that he's basically not going to wake up.

Michael Schumer was in a coma for 6 months

From December 29th until June 16th

Anyways, people who wake up oftenly say they could hear everything going on around them

So talk to your friend, motivate her in waking up

Looking for a signature campaign.

Isn't he still in a coma though? The news reports of him waking up or coming out of his coma were apparently exaggerated like they often are with these sort of celebrity comas. Happened with the bassist of Deftones. People said he was conscious and alert. He was still a bed ridden veg who later died.
