Jump Start PSU Trick for Antminer S3

Hi friends,

I know this might have already popped up somewhere in the S3 topics, but there are just too much to go through all.

I have my S3s arrived yesterday, but some of my PSU just won't start properly even with the paper clip trick.

I have cut the paper clips, and plug them into the ATX to connect the "green and black" wires.  However, some PSU started, 1 just goes on and off ... to me, it seems there is a contact problem, but it is so strange.  From visual there should not be a contact issue.  Furthermore even when I "pull out and push in again" the clip, it won't start, sometimes, but sometimes it has response as I draw the clip out.


Any special "little trick" when making the paper clip jump starter?  Should I make it longer or shorter, push it all in or leave it slightly detached? 


Furthermore, one of the working PSU gets pretty hot, while others are cool.  Fans are running ... should there be a problem with the PSUs?

Swap psu and see if the problem follows the psu.  I haven't had any issues with grounding the turn on pin on an ATX psu, some may not turn on if the load is too low, but with an Antminer, that should not be an issue.

I agree with Pjones, could be a psu problem.  You have enough watts on your PSU to power on the miner? Also, if you're plugged into a powerbar, check the amps allowed on the powerbar. The paperclip trick can be slightly unsafe as well, you can buy the jump start blocks on ebay for $4ea.

I am using 850W Xigmatech Gold Plate PSU for 2x Ants.  Should be sufficient.

Power loading should be OK, 13A @ 220V, powering 3 PSUs.

I would be careful if it's not working there is a good chance you are not making contact, or something is wrong.  If done right it's just like a computer switch.  If you stick in wrong two can not be a good thing 

If done wrong with paperclip and don't know what your doing it can be bad.  Remember electricity is involved.  This isn't really something that does not work, if you do it right it's just like switch.  So any trouble is a worry to hear on this.

They do make switches there are some group buys starting for the new S3 PSU switch they are making.

Some of the cheaper PSUs may need a load on 5V rail to power up. I have an S1 powered by Corsair VS650, and I had to hook up an old HDD to it for it to work properly.

Can we stop opening 30000 S3 threads, it just makes the problem worse. See here if you are having problems.
