Russia has amassed about 20,000 combat-ready troops on Ukraine’s eastern border and could use the pretext of a humanitarian or peace-keeping mission to invade, Nato has warned.

Stating that the conflict in Ukraine was fuelled by Russia, Nato said the troop build-up had further escalated “a dangerous situation”.

“We are not going to guess what is on Russia’s mind, but we can see what Russia is doing on the ground – and that is of great concern. Russia has amassed around 20,000 combat-ready troops on Ukraine’s eastern border,” said Oana Lungescu, a Nato spokeswoman.

Nato was concerned that Moscow could use “the pretext of a humanitarian or peace-keeping mission as an excuse to send troops into eastern Ukraine”, she added. Moscow denies Western accusations that it has armed and supported rebels fighting Ukrainian forces in the east. It announced new military exercises to take place all this week, involving bombers and warplanes, in a show of strength near the border with Ukraine.

The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, said the threat of a “direct intervention” by Russia in Ukraine was “definitely greater than it was a few days ago, or two weeks ago”.

US proposes world peacekeeping force
Rumsfeld floats proposal to end Bush doctrine of unilateralism

The US defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, is discussing the idea of an international peacekeeping force which could be dispatched to maintain order in the world's trouble spots.

"It is not a civilian police force. It is not a political referee. And it is most certainly not designed to build a civilian society."

September 11 changed US foreign policy radically, and stabilising overseas countries is now viewed as a matter of national security.

The United States will help African nations set up a rapid response force to support United Nations and African Union peacekeeping missions, President Barack Obama said Wednesday.

Obama, closing a summit with 50 African countries in Washington, said the force could be dispatched rapidly in support of UN-backed missions on the continent.

"African partner nations will commit to maintaining forces and equipment ready to rapidly deploy and state their intent to deploy as part of UN or AU missions," it said.

"The United States is not the only member of the international community that has a stake in this endeavor, so we will reach out to international partners," it added.

"We are also prepared to provide support, including training for headquarters staff and key enabler functions, such as engineers."

Ethiopia and Rwanda have both taken an active interest in conflicts in their neighborhoods, although the United States has criticized both countries on human rights grounds.

Obama also said that the United States was also working with Africans to develop an "early warning and response network" to identify emerging crises.

A case of the POT calling the Kettle Black or something else in regards to peacekeeping
The peacekeeping forces sent from the USA and it's allies to other countries are OK but not if they are from Russia.
Just curious what opinions are on the idea of peacekeeping versus invasions.

Example Israel troops at their border crossing into the Palestine etc.

regardless of the reasons peacekeeping, humanitarian, invasions ect, one country sends its troops on or cross other countries borders without their permission. It violates their sovereignty.

If you're trying to say that some country shouldn't relocate its troops to somewhere within its borders, then you're violating its sovereignty. Any country is free to do anything within its borders, without asking anybody for their opinion about that. And nobody in the world has any right to tell them what to do within their borders, it's a real sovereignty as is.

Any country would put troops near its border, when a war is cross border. I do not think Nato is fearful at all, just Ukraine attacking its own citizens.

Is this all about Psakiing of the Russian military exercises that happen hundreds of kilometres from Ukrainian border? When the Ministry of defence advised Psaki to start learning geography?
Or are they whining about something else now?

NATO's Rassmussen personally arrived to Kiev on Thursday, saying that he is ready to provide political support of NATO to Kiev (coup) government:
http://www.tvc.ru/news/show/id/46929

This is against a backdrop of a build-up of Maidan-3. (Hey, yet another revolution!) When allegedly more radical groups than the radicals that came to power now started burning tires, clashing with Police special battalions "Kiev-1" and "Kiev-2", shooting, and exploding bombs in the centre of the capital:
http://ria.ru/world/20140807/1019117689.html

In the meantime, while everyone's attention is on Ukraine, Russia announced that its Far-East aviation on Kamchatka has bee raised on unexpected military exercise, involving up to 400 units of planes and ground vehicles, and 2000 troop. I hope it's not the repeat of the 1st of September of 1983 US provocation that lead to a 3-hour air battle over Sakhalin, when at least 13 US planes got shot down, and the world was at a brink of WWIII.

This is exactly what they had told 2 months ago. Did anything happened back then? It surprises me that still there are people who are ready to believe in this BS churned out by the CIA.

You know the press an army can be hanging out at its borders for weeks and no one will bother talking about it, but as soon as one person mentions it the thing spreads like wildfire Smiley

Anyways more interested in the potential travel boycott
http://o.canada.com/travel/air-routes-to-asia-in-doubt-as-russia-ponders-blocking-siberian-airspace

European airlines are confronting possible disruptions in service to northern Asia as Russia considers curbing flights across Siberia to retaliate for sanctions imposed because of the Ukraine crisis.

Trips to Japan and South Korea could be most affected, based on an analysis of routings on the Flightradar24 website, raising the prospect of costly rerouting of planes. At the same time, relatively few international carriers cross eastern Russia, in contrast with more crowded skies closer to Moscow.
