I'm a blue collar, and in my experience, the people who go above and beyond the bosses expectations are the people who get ahead in the company.

Sorry, I know you said assume we are white collar, but I don't think it makes a difference.

Depends on if you see yourself staying at that company for the next 10 years.If yes, absolutely - you want to have the reputation of the guy that gets things done.

Depends, if i see it as helping myself or humanity (in my vision of humanity) then yes im willing to put in "extra".

No. Having well defined job responsibilities and schedules are crucial to the proper functioning of the system. When you go above and beyond, you allow for emotions to creep in.
Emotions are chaotic and will always come in the way of clockwork efficiency. Building reputation this way will always be at the expense of the system, weakening it considerably in the long term.

What about jobs where it is slow and there is only so much you can do?

I often go above and beyond at work, however there are days were it is so quiet and there is so little to do...you really just sort of sit there and cruise the internet..

It depends, if I'm really into the project or feel like it i will, the majority of the time though i get payed for any and all overtime work i do so that's cool.

Yes, the economy is very dire still and you may lose your job if you're not willing to go above and beyond! It's not like in the good old 70s... Not only the music has changed (don't you miss David Bowie, as well?) It's also the working conditions that have changed!

Its also an unspoken rule in the New york offices, that the juniors will not leave for the day unless they see their seniors leave.

The people that go beyon and above in the work are the ones that get the most workload, but the ones that go ahead in the enterprise are those who are good to give the impression they are working and flatter the bosses everytime. Or people that have high rank contacts. Or hot women in general.

Even if you are recognized, you workload will incread 2x by each x more you will get, so the ROI will become lesser and leser, until the work sucks your entire life.

I only go above and beyond when working to myself or in things that matters to me, because the reward I get is pretty much the same any way.

I once went as far as to vacuum the parking lot and polish the grease bucket at a restaurant I once was employed, eventually becoming regional manager of three of the franchise. Motive? To hopefully fuck its current manager by impressing her. It worked!

It depends of the company management first, if they are fair and honest toward employers, if this extra hours will benefit both company and myself, if other employers will also support this and stay longer etc.
