My advice would be. Don't waste energy and time by mining with GTX 280. You will get cca 60 Mhs at cost of 200+ watts and those 60Mhs, will mine you .. nothing Smiley.

You should better try mining N-scrypt coins and sell them for bitcoins. Or check some autoswitching pools like, coinsolver, coinshift, waffepool ...

this is my first time doing this and i don't know what almost any of that means. also i do not know that much about computers. do you have any suggestions on what i should get to start mining and explain what that means

He is just trying to tell you that, your GTX 280 is not efficient enough to earn some profit, your electricity bills might even be higher then your revenue, and mining other algo like n-scrypt gives you better profitability but still it should be unprofitable...

If you want to mine bitcoins directly, should obtain some ASIC miner (it's just standalone device) , even cheap ASCI miner has much better ratio price/Mhs/consumption.
These links can help you make a picture how weak in mining your GPU is.
Scrypt Mining_hardware_comparison
Sha-256 Mining_hardware_comparison

If you still want to use your the GPU, only way is scrypt and N-srypt coins.
As you are beginner, autoswitching pool is good choice, because they take care of selling and you will get btc directly to your wallet. But don't expect much.

check http://coinsolver.com/getting-started.php, there is easy quide how to set up.

Example Scrypt mining> GTX 280 gives you about 60 Khs , current rate on coinsolver is 0.00049 BTC/Mhs/Day .... Thus you will get  0.0000294 BTC daily.

Yeah, CPUs and Graphics cards are somewhat 1000 times (no kidding) less effective than dedicated ASIC devices. And since everyone has ASICs nowadays (even 2nd and 3rd generation kinds of them already) the difficulty is much too high to mine with CPUs or GPUs anymore. That stuff became unprofitable in 2012.

Why? Could you please state an explicit argument why you believe it is that way? First, why is Linux not suitable for running games. And why would a command line miner be more reliable? GUIs are most of the times effectively only tools to control the Command Line miners!
