I have done domain registering before with real person information, but I was thinking is it legal to register a domain with fake data ?

I'm asking this because some good domains are not registered, yet. So I want to register and then sell them without my personal data being saved.

Is that possible ?

I wonder though how people will be able to tell that it actually is fake data. If you take a 'real' sounding name and a legit address, how will anyone be ever able to tell that you used fake credentials for that? I'm not saying this is a good thing to do, though!

Yes you can. You can enter a fake name, address, number, but make sure to include a valid email because ICANN usually sends a confirmation email.  Other than that the only way for someone to figure out if your address is real is to visit or send a letter to the address and see what happens.

Ok, that's good to hear. Will give it a try, and after registration I'll do a hide whois, perhaps that will also help.

It is identity thief in all jurisdictions, I think.

But if you do good enough and pay on time, will be hard they discover, and even if they discover the registration used fake data, will be hard to proof you made it.


Plus I think they are more interested in money than to check registration data.

Some TLDs give optional "whois privacy" that hides your data from public.
You should use it instead of fake data.

I doubt that this would really be a threat because the reporter would have no way of knowing for sure the data is fake unless it is gibberish.

IMO investing in domains is really not a good investment.

I don't think you really need anything to be "real" other then your email (although you can just make up a new email address). No one would really ever know if you put in a fake name/address for your domain.

I have registered the domains, and then for free the registrar offered whois protection, so I think that's fair enough

There are a few registers which offer a way that will hide your identity from people who are looking at whois you should consider looking at them and maybe doing business with them I can't remember who offers the services now I think it's for privacy reasons.
