Wow that really is a sharp increase. Almost reminds me of the times of the first ASICs hitting the market in 2013 where 20% were considered a small increase! I wonder whether this is ASICMiner ramping up their new mining plans. We've seen quite some increase in unknown mining addresses or the DiscusFish pool, as it seems: data.bitcoinity.org/bitcoin/hashrate/6m?c=m&t=l

I should have gotten into Bitcoin back in 1992...

very sharp increase! To keep the same mining reward, you have to buy extra mining rig!

The old miner's fallacy, or at least one of them. It's interesting to see that people aren't used to a mere 20% increase anymore Cheesy It used to be the minimum increase back in 2013 or even the beginning of 2014 Cheesy

2011 - 18%
2012 - 4%
2013 - 22%
2014 - 16% (year to date)

As much as I would like to see a slowdown if average difficulty increases, history is not on our side.

People got complacent with 2 difficulty jumps less than 10%.  The last one we just had was because of bad luck - look at the network stats, the CDF was close to 1.10 for all pools meaning about 10% wasted shares.

Looks like that Northern hemisphere winter is starting to ramp up miners  Cheesy

This is an unexpected delivery of miners. S3's don't explain this increase. Potentially SP30s coming online in a hosted farm.

I think we are looking at a combination of Spondooley/Bitmain but mostly major mining data centre operations are being kicked off by the looks of it.

http://www.coinwarz.com/network-hashrate-charts/bitcoin-network-hashrate-chart

That is reporting the network hashrate at 215 PH at the moment. Differs remarkably from https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty
which still has it at about 179 PH.

This has virtually NOTHING to do with consumer gear being delivered to home miners.

This is from private Massive Mining Operations (MMOs) like Bitfury waging war on the network hashrate.

Wild guess here... but I would say that at this point in time, home miners make up about 10% of the network hashrate.

OK let me rephrase that then with uppercase.

".....but MOSTLY major mining data centre operations....."

Hope that helps.

LOL.  BFL has shown they can't even manufacture/outsource a decent PSU.  It would take BFL 2 years to add 40PH/s to the network unless they buy it from another vendor.  Even if they added all the Monarch power to the network it would be less than 5PH/s (unless they were showing fake prototype cards at the conventions).

Right now Coinwarz is reporting 210 PH and Bitcoinwisdom is reporting the total hashrate at 180 PH

I am not sure why the two sites report so differently.

Difficulty will spike more than usual the next time, because of poor luck in the last frame.

I don't think it will be above 25% but it is already over 10%.  My guess would be around 20%.  This of course because I decided to get back into mining to try out an S3 - figures.

You missinterpret the stats. It is already @~19.5% but there is still a week to go, so we will likely see >22-25%. No way it will be around 20%

Bitcoin Difficulty:   19,729,645,941

Estimated Next Difficulty:   22,959,869,961 (+16.37%)
