HELP - How do i back-up my Multibit wallet ???

Hi All

I have around 10 BTC in one encrypted wallet and want to back it up and open another encrypted wallet and send my coins to the new one.

Is it just a case using the 'Export private Keys'

I can not see ANYwhere an option to 'back up your wallet' ??

I plan to back it up to the PC i am using plus couple of memory sticks each timei hit 10 BTC.

ALso when i create a new wallet will it create a new BTC address ??

Multibit generate backup files for you automatically.  You can copy the files and store them on your USBs.

You can back it up with the private keys, yes. I've never actually used Multibit, but private keys are what each ADDRESS uses as proof that it's legitimately transacting with through address. Wallets contain your addresses, so if you don't want to back up every address with it's private keys, you'll want to back up your wallet file. (Bitcoin Core calls this "wallet.dat" and it's located in the user's data directory. I'm not sure what MultiBit calls theirs or where it's stored.)

If you copy your wallet.dat to a secure location then you have a cold backup. That's what I use for my setup, I keep 3 flash drives in 3 different locations so I have a copy of my bitcoins in case anything happens.

Hi, Multibit bakup is very simple, just store wallet.dat on safe place. Don't forget to encrypt your wallet, otherwise anybody with access to it, is able to spend them.

I have been trying to locate wallet.dat file but can not find it ?

When i do back it up do i just copy the file or do i completely remove it/cut it from the its location ?

If i have several wallets will i have wallet.dat files ??

I still don't fully understand how it works BUT if i stored my wallet.dat file NOW and it has 10 coins in it THEN i send another 5 coins to that wallet, what happens if i do a 'recovery' from the wallet.dat will it still show the 5 new mined coins ??

Or do i just do ONE backup for each wallet and thats it !!!

Yes.

Then perhaps encrypt the USB and hide the encryption key on a cloud based solution (if we're already on the topic of backups & security that is).

Well that's some horrible and completely useless advice.

MultiBit doesn't have a file called "wallet.dat".  Why would you waste your time, and the time of the OP making such a ridiculous and useless suggestion?

Here is a list of the files stored with your wallet:

• saving.wallet  =  This is the main wallet file containing your private keys and transactions.
• saving.info  =  This file contains the description of the wallet and the labels you have given to your addresses.
• saving-data  =  A directory containing your wallet backup files.
• saving-data/key-backup  =  A directory containing your automatically generated private key export files.
• saving-data/rolling-backup  =  A directory containing your rolling wallet backups.
• saving-data/wallet-backup  =  A directory containing your encrypted wallet backups.
• saving-data/wallet-unenc-backup  =  A directory containing your unencrypted wallet backups.

You should be fine with creating a backup of the "saving.wallet" file.

Personally, I'd probably just backup all of the above.  If you are running windows you should be able to find it in:
C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/Application Data/MultiBit

You can see the path to the wallet file in the multibit window title bar. Note it down. Close multibit and make a copy of the wallet file.

Each time you create a new address in multibit you will have to make a fresh backup because private keys are randomly generated in multibit. This will change when multibit hd comes out.

SORRY for asking so many questions, but if that's the case i should be backing up every time i earn a coin or at a set period  (every 3/4 days) ??

No, you just need to back up your wallet when you add more addresses to it. The coin value is stored in the blockchain for security reasons.

It seems as if windows 7 stores them in -

I have NO - appdata file ??

The AppData folder is hidden by default.
You can either change your windows setting to show hidden files and folders as well, or you can access the folder by entering %APPDATA% directly on your location bar.
