The way I understand it is if your running your bitcoin-qt wallet in server mode it let's people with programming experience make remote call's programmatically.  In other words, all that complicate stuff that you can access from the bitcoin console you can basically do remotely from some programming language.

no, that's the api of an exchange, not the bitcoin api.
the bitcoin api is used to control and get data from the bitcoind node
you can create transactions to send money or check if you received, but you can't make a trading bot or a price ticker

I guess you quite didn't understood the meaning of API either its Application program interface.Basically they help developers embedding a particular program interface into their own application/software for the ease of use.
