Hello  Smiley
Just thought it would be fun to see if you guys are going to shut down your miners and computers during Earth hour 2012. For you guys that don't know what it is you can read more about it here http://www.earthhour.org/. Between 8:30 PM and 9:30 pm on Saturday (31st), you are suppose to shut down all electrical devices.

Yea I think that most of the big miners have to many miners to be able to shut them down for only a hour, as it would take to long to restart them. I only got one miner so I was planing to shut it down for the event, it wont take that long to start it again after earth hour Smiley
Would be fun though to see if the overall hash rate of the bitcoin network is effected or not Tongue

I thought about this yesterday. I'm not a miner, but would love to view the effects, via some chart once the data is extracted, on this thread.

I guess we could check this graph http://bitcoin.sipa.be/ and see if there's any downward spikes under the earth hour Smiley
nvm, I think the graphs are not zoomed in enough to show us the hour by hour network speed. I will try to look for a better graph

Article booring but one interesting point from the comments after the above article:

Quote
What do these knuckleheads think they are saving by switching off for an hour? The spike in excess generation shunted to ground, excess steam pressure vented, what a waste. Then, just about when the grid operators get things stabilized, a spike in demand occurs as everyone switches back on. What thoughtless irresponsibile ineffective dunces these dogooders are.

This is true and gets worse the more "successful" the event is.  Although if operators know the consumption is going down and then up again they can plan for it to a certian degree.

Our family was terrorized by Homeland Security.  Read all about it here:  http://www.jmwagner.com/ and http://www.burtw.com/  Any donations to help us recover from the $300,000 in legal fees and forced donations to the Federal Asset Forfeiture slush fund are greatly appreciated!

I don't actually think the operators take down reactors and such just because of a planned down spike of demand. They should know about the event and that the electricity usage will go back up after the hour.

That is exactly the point.  They cannot really reduce production for just one hour so they maintian production.  Thus all the energy "saved" is really just energy wasted.

So, go all in, make a Miner's Day Off where everyone kills their miners for an entire 24 Hours at 0 Hundred UTC, and see what happens then?

This is a great idea!  I really hope that you can get all the other miners to do this.

I will raise my clock rates, first up additional AC and fire up all my spare cards at full capacity that day and reap the rewards  Grin

There would be no rewards for you man, but it would really suck for people trying to do business in Bitcoin that wouldn't get any confirms on their transactions.

This is like UN Resolutions. It won't work and for the same reasons.

e.g.

UN Resolution § 42.01.10 BTC Mining Carbon Footprint Reduction

All miners shut down for the day.

Really says: Lets have people shut down so we can make more money and have an advantage.

Now this is usually done indirectly through ideology. Or sheep being sheep being guided without knowing they are being guided.

Not that I am against the philosophy, but 9 Billion people will not get fed by solar power.

However, rather than give some an advantage by telling people to shut down for a while, why not give a Bounty for a solar powered rig that reaches say: 1 GH/s.

I will put 1 BTC towards that bounty if someone wishes to start it.

See it is a market driven subsidy from the whole and isn't forced through taxes.
