You don't need to use that wallet, you can use Multibit which doesn't download the blockchain. The online wallet on Blockchain.info is fine too.

I'm not familiar with multibit, but there's probably a button named "Backup Wallet", or "Export private keys", or something similar.

If you are currently using Bitcoin core you will want to make a backup of the file "wallet.dat". It is important to do this because if that file is lost or corrupted then you will lose your bitcoin. I recommend several copies. You can find this file by typing in the run box in windows. If you use Linux it can be found in the hidden file . I forget where it is in mac. The file may be named something else in multibit and the core wallet may not be compatible, but once you have a backup copy you always have a way to get to your bitcoins. Make a backup before you do anything else.

To back up your Multibit wallet, you just need to back up the ".wallet" file in your Multibit directory.

Downloading the blockchain from the start will take a huge amount of time depending on your connection, but you can buy a usb stick with the chain in it in the market section

+1 for Electrum. Unlike Multibit, it is a deterministic wallet and so you only need to make just 1 backup of your wallet seed no matter how many addresses you create and use.
