I'm interested in finding out how to disable those pesky alert messages after seeing them for a while, using bitcoin-qt for linux here, from ppa, and getting really bothered by the last "urgent" fix for windows users that lasts for more than 2 weeks now and doesn't show any sign of disappearing any time soon.

Thanks

Upgrade to 0.6.

How often do you get the chance to work on a potentially world-changing project?

Why would you want to run an older version of bitcoin, even if the linux version was not affected by this particular bug?

ver. 0.5.3 here, i don't want to update to "bleeding edge" version

edit: phrasing

edit2: @Gavin would you be so kind to write a patch for ver. 0.5.3 that makes alerts go off after a while, 5 minutes for ex.

Version 0.6 has gone through a lot of testing and multiple release candidates before declared ready. I have no reason to believe it's "bleeding edge".

Besides, having an updated client helps the network.

Nope, sorry, have higher priority things to do.

Wait.

I can see making it a feature request for future versions.  That makes sense.  One should be able to disable alerts especially ones that don't involve the user.

Perfectly reasonable.  However to request they patch an older version so you can avoid upgrading is just silly.  v0.6 isn't bleeding edge.

v0.6 RC1 was and RC2, and RC3, and RC4, and RC5.

You just need to advance the version number so it's past 0.5.3. This is a trivial change. Probably you could change it in the binary easily enough if you really wanted to.
