Bitcoin doesn't work...

I know I'm supposed to delete some file/s in the .bitcoin directory (is that right?) but (a) I don't know how to view what's in the .bitcoin directory and (b) I don't know how to delete and which file/s to delete.  I've just learned a little about "cd" and "ls" and "rm -f" but I still don't know how to get into directories and delete specific files.  Please help and thanks in advance.

Next step: a miner for Linux.  I'd prefer a GUI but I wouldn't mind using Pheonix if I knew how to download/install it and then how to use it.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to do. Are you trying to run the bitcoin client? What OS are you using?

Almost all miners work in Linux, with many specifically targeting Linux. Look at cgminer or Diablo miner. Diablo miner is pretty straightforward and easy to set up, so long as you have Java installed. Cgminer can be a bit more difficult to get set up, but it offers a lot more features.

If using a graphical env. just go to your home personal folder, press CTRL+H and you'll see the .bitcoin dir and after entering it also see what's in it.

You have to admit, this post sounds a little funny

rm -f is a powerful command to tell a wallet

a quick way to start fresh, and save any old wallet (esp if there's money!)

mv ~/.bitcoin ~/.bitcoin.OLD

then start bitcoin and you'll redownload the blockchain.

Do I still need a miner?  If so, where can I download a graphical miner?  I've been trying to download Phoenix and CGMiner without much luck.

My current OS is Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty).

GUIminer is a graphical miner.
cgminer is very easy to use as well as phoenix. Just start with necessary parameters.
