I'm all set to open an account with an exchange service. Mt gox seems to be the most popular but I wanted to know what the alternatives are. Thanks for any input

The advantages and disadvantages of the different options will depend on where you are, what payment methods you use.

Take your pick

http://www.bitcoincharts.com/markets/

You can't win if you don't play. But you can't play if you lose all your chips. First I found bitcoin (BTC). Then I found something better, Monero (XMR). See GetMonero.org
