Absolutely every Canadian I've talked to has said they will happily accept Gold/Silver with a smile, that includes companies.

Do they sell the metal or keep it as savings? Are they getting it from customers cheaper than they could buy it?

It always seemed to me that it logistical difficulty made it more sensible to use the currency of the realm and then buy what you wanted to save in (and I think gold is a great choice).

Are you spending metal at these places? Moving to Canada is in the back of my mind with the whole collapsing fascist anti-poker regime we've got happening here. Before Bitcoin my dream was to have relationships with merchants who would take my metals so that I could hold very few FRNs, but I don't know how to do it. Now I'm banking (pun) on Bitcoin and I have much higher hopes.

I live in the U.S. and it's hard to convince people that the dollar is going to collapse, I've been warning everyone I know to buy gold and silver (and now bitcoin) for years and only 1 person has listened to me about gold/silver and 1 about bitcoin. Most people I know here, even people who are intelligent in other areas, have a huge normalcy bias and don't consider transacting in anything besides usd. It's good to hear that people in other parts of the world are more open.

I'm not too worried about it because I have large student loans, and an even larger mortgage.  Basically, I have nothing to lose, and everything to gain if the dollar goes into hyper-inflation mode.

Well... The gas station won't let me pay in gold or BTC. Neither will the grocery store, my university or the utility companies... Also hookers don't accept BTC, though they might accept gold in the form of bling bling.

OP's idealistic world where everyone accepts milligrams of gold for every item doesn't exist. And no one even knows about BTC. We're a small number compared to everyone else. Though it is growing.

Actually, everyone I have every asked does ... just ask for managers and such, not the idiot behind the counter ...
Have you actually ASKED about it ... most people haven't .. they just ASSUME not.

Also, I've noticed that most people answer as 'the U.S. doesn't blah ' ... hey .. quit doing business with todays' stupid Nazis.   The U.S. citizens is horrible, uneducated, idiots for the most part (not all but most) ... these are people that not only do not know the name of their own nation .. but can not point it out on a map of itself, literally.

I'm not focusing on the U.S.   I prefer some intelligence.
Absolutely every Canadian I've talked to has said they will happily accept Gold/Silver with a smile, that includes companies.

Yeah buddy, let me just drive to that OTHER university that I attend. You know? The one that actually accepts gold. And yeah, a corporate or chain type store would not accept gold. I would laugh if someone tried to pay me in gold. No one keeps a weighing apparatus on hand in case some weirdo wants to pay in gold.

Yes the US is horrible. Great generalization there buddy. Let me make a generalization. You have horrible grammar and produce illogical/strawman arguments, therefor your entire country is bad at grammar and it's number one export is logical fallacies.

Since your (U.S.) Dollar is going the way of the dinosaur, doesn't it make FAR more sense to look at systems that can convert UNIVERSALLY to/from ANY Fiat fire starter instead of just their kindling???

usd is not going anywhere for a long long time, it is most likely still most used currency (both officialy and unoficially) in whole world
there is 'over 800 billion US dollars in cash money in circulation' while whole btc market is worth like 15-20M usd?

i like bitcoins, but i don't see any chance for it to be used INSTEAD another currency for next 5 years or perhaps more, everyone on this forum still have to eat, pay bills, etc. etc. so why NOT to focus on actual money that can be spend everywhere?

I use USD only because mtgox use USD.

Both BRL (my national currency) and USD are behaving in a volatile manner here, if I had gold/silver/copper, I would gadly ask people to accept it.

If we had a proper gold/BTC exchange, so we could tag BTC value in gold (instead of tagging it in... nothing?!?), I would buy bitbills and offer them too to merchants.

hehe .. I'm not U.S. so ...
if I want bitcoin .. I work for it .. sell something ... just like any true currency .. earn it ??

The exchanges are only good for judging against fire starter .. but Gold and Silver have always had set values as currency ..

The day I can make anywhere close to what I can make when I get paid in fiat, I get paid in Bitcoin.

Yes .. shit .. you can probably only make like 1 third in BTC what you make in Fiat ...

oh ya .. that's the exchange rate .. and the Fiat is LOOSING value ...

It's LOOSING!

Trouble is, I don't save 100% of my paycheck.  I need to eat, I need to put a roof over my family's head, I need to pay bills, etc...  What is left can of course be saved.  I could buy BTC with that if I really wanted to.  So I'll need the exchange rate to survive.

But when I could actually use BTC to actually pay for such things and actually can get paid enough to maintain my standard of living, maybe I will start thinking that way.

Does that mean we can turn it into a 9/11 deniers thread? :-P

I tried that with every store in a mall that's near, and I got a "no" from everyone.

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
